Coast Guard Closing TN River Downtown 4 Hours Saturday

Chattanooga Fishing Forum

Help Support Chattanooga Fishing Forum:

I sure hope any teams that may be planning to fish down that way this weekend hear that. It would be bad to get stuck on the wrong side and run out of time. Hopefully since it is till 2 they would have time to get back before it ended in the CBA. emoAngel Jmax

I disagree with this totally. I understand making no wake zone or escorting boats through but it close it is not a logical idea for anyone but swimmers

Haha, when I read this I thought of you Dusty! hahahaha

Im confused, with the VERY slim amount of fishing reports that come out of that part of the fishery, I cant understand why people are upset over a measly 4 hr closed window?

Just moor one boat on each side of the closed zone and swim from one to the other==Problem Solved emoBigsmile

I agree this is stupid. They tried to close the boat ramp last year and I explained that I was not fishing in the closed area and that I would be putting my boat in and heading to the dam. They should be given a lane of the river and should enforce an idle through that stretch of the river.

It is interesting that they choose to pick one sport over another. Some people may have only a short window to fish that day, but the river should never be closed unless an emergency occurs. I wonder if it would be okay for the Coast Guard to close the river to pleasure boats, the River Destroyer, and the yachts if I decide I want to fish for a few hours in peace? It should be just as simple as putting out an announcement right?

It's odd that I didn't put two and two together when I originally saw this post, but I saw the news report tonight and this is the SAME group that is proposing a DEDICATED swim lane, that would completely close one bank to fishing and anyone in a boat attempting to cross it. We need to wake up and write our congressmen and Senators and oppose this high handed attempt to annex the water we use to fish in. Let me be clear: Karen Nazor has made it very CLEAR that they want a permanent lane of water, closed to any and all boat traffic, fishing or not. Ms. Nazor's mother works for the Times Free Press. Obviously these people have lobbied the Coast Guard to do this temporary closure, with out ANY input from other people that use the water. How much longer until they grant a permanet closure and lane designation? The originial article from last year is here: http://www.chattanoogafishingforum.com/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=74199&posts=26&mid=559058&highlight=swimmers&highlightmode=1&action=search</p>

Ridiculous. Guess they need to close the gorge in the fall color cruise because fisherpeople need to be uninterrupted.

Ridiculous. Since it took them 260 participants to get this done, why not next time there is a fishing tournament with 200+ participants (equal to about 100 plus boats), someone file for the same thing banning all other boat traffic since those dang pleasure boats and especially jet skis are seriously dangerous to bass boats.

Actions like this are insidious. They creep up on you without you even knowing about it. I have no problem sharing the river for an event. Sharing to me means a no wake zone in the area and bouys that deny entry into the area where the swimmers are for that 4 hour period. This a complete closure.

If you use google to look up "Karen Nazor swim lane Chattanooga" the intent becomes very clear. They want a swim lane from the bridges on the North Shore all the way up to the middle of the Golf Course bank.

Quote on Tri-Cities.com : "The group wants a swimmers' lane set off by buoys along the North Shore from near the Olgiati Bridge upstream to the power lines at Chattanooga Golf and Country Club."

Quote from the Times Free Press: "The swim-lane proposal aims at barring motorized watercraft from a narrow, bouyed area along the North Shore outside the main channel -- except when docking or supporting other nonmotorized boats."

Note they said BARRING, not sharing or a no wake zone.
