I have no need for it other than I just want one! You pistol la gun guru guys that are in the know, tell me what to look for. The good, the bad, how much, What? I have found one that was made in 1983 for $850. Is that good, bad about right? Also I have a friend that has one that was made in 1918, I think. It's old and somewhere in that era. He wants to send it to Colt to for reconditioning. He said if Colt does it that it doesn't hurt the value. I've heard differently form others that it is only original once and it will hurt. What do you guys say?

Too high. You can purchase a new one for that. Older 1911s are not worth anything unless they are SPECIAL in some manner. A run-of-the-mill Colt is just another used pistol. The best price and selection I have found is at Coal Creek Armory in Knoxville. It's well worth the hour drive, imo. Nice guys and excellent selection of pistols.

Check out the 1911 Forum on Glocktalk.com. There is a guy on there bac1023 that has a comparison of a bunch of 1911's for your reference. I know this doesn't exactly answer your question. There is alot of info for you're reference though.

You DON"T refurb an old warhorse like that Colt. Tell your friend to leave it in the safe or sell it as is.

Old three screw Ruger single action revolvers don't retain their collecting value after being upgraded by Ruger so why would the .45 be worth the same.

Colt Defender is worth a look , around 900 new . 750 used . Great carry guns , I've had 3 . If your looking to go cheaper , then you have the Rock Island Armory 45's . Llamma and charles dailys are pretty cheap , and very heavy .

Hair jig has me on target! I'm looking at the plain 1911 Goverment 70 single action, blue steel, wood grips. No anniversary, Gold Cup, Rail or anything else. Thanks for all the info!

If you are looking for the "Colt" brand, Coal Creek is going to have the best selection and competitive prices. Give them a call.

Hope you get that Colt...elwestb. I have a Remington Rand, WWII. I love this gun. I have had Sigs..carry a Kimber Ultra....but if I only had one gun choice...it would be the Remington Rand...45.

Were they helpful? Did they treat you right with the price? (no need to post the cost ... just curious if they were still good).
