Me and my Dad are looking at getting a new hull but keeping the same engine we have on our boat now. Do you guys know how much it cost to "transplant" a motor from one boat to another?

The motor is a BRP Johnson 150 hp

Or call Paul Nichols at 451-0125. Great guy, great work, fair, and I don't think this is his busy season. He may be able to get you a good deal on a boat as well.

Gotcha...It's not terribly difficult, but probably a smart decision given that you havent done much with them before...I would definitely recommend James (wrenchin) as a consultant... emoBeer

if the hull your switching to had the same type of engine you are going to put on it and the control box and wirin harness is still in the boar then it is a fairly simple job . But if it had a different type engine you will have to take all that off your old boat and put on the new one . johson/eveinrude most are the same as well as mercury and mariner

You may also run into cable lenths being different. I am doing one right now where I am "transplanting" a mercury 150 from a venture to a bullet. The cable lenths are diferent and the bullet was rigged with a Johnson. So I am having to install everything plus replace the cables. Most of the time people remove the controls to keep a complete engine. Plus if they have jack plates, that make it that much easier. If your father feels comfortable doing it, I will be happy to talk to him and give him what ever information he needs. Some boats are easier rigged than other. JMO.....

Not sure what kind of engine the boat had on it....... We are just trying to get a ballpark price of what it will cost to determine whether or not to get the boat

I am charging $200 (4hrs) on the one I am doing. One had a jackplate and the other didn't. I had to remove everything from one and install in the other. I simply evaluate how long it will take on what I have in front of me. Some boats are easy to rig and some are very difficult. I had removed the engine off the Bullet for another guy and I pulled a rope through when I removed the controls. This will make my job easier to rig it and I took it into account. Also if things like the tach will have to be switched. If yours uses a smart tach and the boat you gets has a "normal' tach. Then that is more work. There is just so much to take into account. A ball park would probably be $75 (already rigged for your engine) and up to around $400(having to swap gauges, hot foots, ect). Hard to say without looking at it.

I have a labor guide that states for a 150 mercury (some install precedures, different brands) that I should charge 6 hours to install the engine. This is for a new crated engine and not having to remove from another boat. There are differnt labor guide manuals, so you may get lower and higher prices. This is just the one I have. I go by the book on rebuilds, lowers, ect because it will be the same precedure as99% of thoserepairs will not be effected by what boat it is bolted to. I don't go by it on things like rigging because they are not accurate. Each boat is different. Hope this helps.emoToast emoToast
