This friday I had a chance to get out and go fishing at Chester Frost. I went to the pier with a bucket of minnows left over from a few previous trips.
That day I tried a rig that I noticed some people were having success with at Booket T pier one day I went there during break.
It is a simple rig with a minnow and a drop shot.
It worked very well for me. Within 20 minutes I had already reeled in 2 perch.
I lost a lot of minnows over the course of the day trying to fish with artificial lures with one rod and either a dropshot rig or carolina rig on the other 2 rods I had.
I also got snagged and broke off several times(possibly with fish as well)
During the course of fishing whenever I had a minnow die on me, I would set them out in the sun to dry, to reuse as bait later.
Several hours later after catching the perch, I began to catch a few drum steadily. Then I caught some bluegill.
Finally I had to pack up and go to work. And just for kicks, I hooked up one of my sundried minnows to a hook, and splitshot, and began packing up everything. Then I noticed the line twitching, so I stopped and set the hook. At first I thought I was just caught up again. Then I noticed I was on a decent sized fish(for a light rod anyways). As the fight began, I noticed that it seemed like I had a catfish on the line. A few minutes later, he was on the surface and I was trying to figure out how I was going to get him on the pier(as he was still fresh, and I had 4 lb line). Luckily a family was fishing there and had a good net and helped me get him up.
Lo and behold, I had caught my first flathead. In the past I had mistaken channel catfish as flathead. As soon as I saw the fish I realized my error.
I released the flathead after taking a few pictures and went on my way.
As I was leaving it began to rain.
So fishing total. 2 perch, 3 drum, 2 bluegill and 1 flathead.
Other notable events.
I broke parts of the line on my new cast net when I let the net get too deep and snag on something after a cast to try to get some of the baitfish swimming around.
There was a kid who had tons of fun with his family(from virginia visiting a local aunt I believe), catching some bluegilll.(its heart warming seeing the joy a kid can have from watching the bobber go under and reeling in a 4 inch bluegill)
There were 2 good sized bass that were caught in around 4ft-8 ft of water.
The bite was mostly slow, and crappie were nowhere to be seen.
I continue to learn from observation, and improve in fishing. I am getting better at linewatching, and setting the hook.
I will return later sometime to post a picture I took of the drum, and of the flathead.
