ok crankbait fisherman, what is the best color and crankbait for late summer early fall bass.trying to be a better crankbait fisherman but all the different brands and colors are confusing.emoBang

For right now, a DD22 in Lavender Shad or a Mann's 20+ in chatreuse/blue. In a month or so, DT16s, DD14s, and Fat Free Shads in the same patterns will effectively cover the 12 to 14 foot range found at creek mouths and cove ditches. When they put the feed-bag on in the fall, break out the Bandit 100s/200s, LC Pointers and your favorite trap.

I picked up a copy of Joe Bucher's "Crankbait Secrets" a while back at Wal-Mart. It is very informative. Must not have been too popular though, it was discounted to $2.93 from a list of $19.95.

I like to stick with shad colors. When the water cools and the bass start gouging their stomachs for winter a 1/2 oz chrome/blue rattle trap around points in daytime works good for me. Blue/chartreuse in stained, muddy water. If the fish are holding at a certain depth, then a DT series rapala that dives to that depth usually does the trick.

There are a lot of good brands and cb's out there. I've bought and bought thinking each one would be better. If I could do it all over I would get a fat and thin cb for each depth I intended to fish, some square bills for timber/stumps, and rattletraps. Saves a lot of money and covers the water column.

just my $.02

I pretty much just fish the Norman crankbaits. Dd22-14. My favorite color is the grey ghost. Lavender is definately a close second. As far as rattling baits, i'm now a huge fan of the XR50's. Favorite color there is royal red, with ghost a close second.

I like the fat free shads in the crawdad color and the shad color. I have caught quite a few this summer on the DD22 in the Blue Chartruse color. I also love to throw lipless crank baits. The Cordell Superspot in Crome blue with the orange belly is my all time favorite anywhere I fish in the fall. Any shad color will work as well. When the water cools burn em across your favorite flat and you will get BIt. Good luck.

I would have to say, My best luck that time of the year has come on red. It works real good when the water is a little colored.

I know Blazer mentioned crankbaits, but have you considered throwing 4-5" grubs. I really like Zoom's Fat Albert in the green pumpkin. On a 1/4oz head you can cover any depth.  The preferred method is a slow, steady retrieve.  Plus, if you get hung up and break off, you haven't lost much money.

I am much like the mad bomber, I through plastics about 90% of the time. The other 10% I use traps. Just make sure you have a good lure retreiver with you I will save you some money.

I usually throw a Rapala DT-16 in the Black back and silver sides. DD22 Ghost Color and Mann's 30+ Ghost Color. IN THAT ORDER. The DT-16 gets down deep fast and has a thin bill on it so you cant be slapping it around to hard or you will bust the bill off of it. Also once you have thrown the bait long enough the DT-16's become water logged and that's when they are getting broke in good. Stop Crank and Pause.... and the DT-16 when water logged will just sit there perfectly right on the bottom or the depth that you are cranking. You have to throw them for a day or two before they get to this point (water logged).

Okay guys you got my interest up. Went and found some Lavender Shad DD-14s and DD-22s and promptly bought a couple of each...even got some in the Deep Little Ns. Great looking color...not sure how I've overlooked it in the past.

Just FYI...my wife and I went down to Sportsmans Warehouse in Chattanooga. They have all Normal crankbaits for under $4 there. I think they are $3.80 something...including the DD-14s and DD22s. Thats quite a drive for me to make so I racked up on them while I was there. In my home town store Legends Outdoor Advantage, they are nearly $6 a pop.

That should tell you something! supply/ DEMAND! The baits work! I usually stick to shad and bluegill patterns as far as color. Of the crankbaits I personally own, 95% are DD22s. But I'd still rather throw a DJW football jig to catch those deep fish!

When the water cools in Oct. I will go back to guiding for bass. The lure of choice to put fish in the boat is a shad pattern or white medium to shallow running Bandit crankbait. Early spring and fall are the only time I have clients throwing cranbaits.
