I fished a couple of hours today from 5:00 til 7:00 PM. I targeted Crappie the first hour in the Island Cove/Waconda Bay area and caught 6. 3 Keepers and 3 throwbacks about 9" long. Shifted gears and decided to go fish a bream bed that I found yesterday in the Harrison Bay area, while fishing with my 6 year old granddaughter. I kept 20 large bluegill, 1 shellcracker, 1 yellow perch and threw back 1 bass, and 1 shad.

I told myself that I wasn't going to make another cast after 7:00 PM and boy was it a lesson in discipline as I was catching fish on every cast. I caught 1 shellcracker and 1 large bluegill in the last minute before 7:00.

Here's how: Caught the Crappie on a Southern Pro 1 1/2" white worm that I dunked the tail and about half of the body in chartreuse spike it. Bleeding hook 1/32 oz jigs and the fish were over 15 feet deep. I was counting down the little jig and had a couple hit it at the 15 count, so I concentrated about that depth.

The sunfish and others were caught in the back of coves in less than 5 feet of water and were caught on 1" squirming grubs in the pumpkinseed color and 1/32 oz jigs. Oh, btw, I never use more than 1/32 oz jigs for Crappie or bluegills. I'll probably go again on Thursday, the good Lord and the weather permitting.emoAngel

Thanks drumking! Are you going to whip us all at Crackerfest? I hope you can make it!

I wouldn't bet on whipping anyone at the fest. However, no one will have more fun trying than me. We are going to try and make the fest if at all possible. We are supposed to be in Maryville that weekend, but we can probably go up on thursday and come back home on friday of that week hopefully. Surely we will have a big turnout. I know all the passion that you younger guys have for bass tournaments right now and I used to be that way myself, but why not just have a family fun tournament with these sunfish? Ultralite rod and reel, 4 lb test line and big shellcracker pulling on the line, what can be more thrilling than that?

Especially when you have already caught that 10 pound bass in your lifetime, won club tournaments, caught 30 and 40 pound stripers until your arms and shoulders ached from all the stress of fighting them. Yep, for me at least, it's time to kick back, make short fishing trips, figure out different ways to fool these little fish and just have a blast with the wife and grandkids.

All of you guys don't have to worry about Drum King beating you on anything but who has the cleanest hands at the end of the day!! There are "feed'em" guys and "fool'em" guys and he is strictly a "fool'em" guy. He is the Master, though.

Those are kind words, Madbomber, and you said it just like I told you too! Actually, exaggerating the truth is a no-no as well. Are you going to try to make the fest and fish with your grandsons?

For what it's worth:
I don't have a boat but I've fished a few times off the pier at Chickamauga over the last few weeks. This is next to the parking lot near the boat ramp. I stand facing the marina and make short cast towards either the marina or the bank to my right. Using a 1 1/2 inch tube, 1/16 or 1/32 oz jig head. It's a white tube with black flakes. Paid 88-cents for a pack of 20 at Wally World. I've been catching a bunch of bluegills in that spot over the past few weeks.
I prefer bass fishing but sometimes after work I don't have a lot of time to fish so that's close and I know I can catch fish there. Good times! I've been using a yo-yo type retreive, working those tubes pretty slow. Good success. Hope this helps someone.
