Crappie fishin on the Hiwassee

Haven't heard a one and yesterday was looking for the crappie as we fished and never really saw any action. Also have not seen the crappie fisherman out in force yet like normal so I do not think they have taken off yet. I will post it when they do here on the Chick.emoCool Jmax

Thanks JMax. I usually do most of my crappie fishing on the lower part of chick but have heard of some awesome fishin on the hiwasee.

Some of my work buddys have been fishing the river above 58hwy (agency, rogers, candies creeks) with little sucess the last two weeks. I usually don't start fishing that area until mid-late march, not that I do all that great then, but I do heard reports of good numbers of keepers.
tndoe, do you live in that area? Maybe you could give me a few pointers. The guy's I know that do catch them usually troll for them (that's what they tell me), but wont give any locations. Like I'm going to "dry hole"the place or something!lol.

drc, I live towards the lower end but I have heard of many crappies being caught around the Hiwasee area. I just thought it might be worth looking into one day for a change of scenary. I have bass fished up that way several times but not crappie.

I was up around the 58 bridge that crosses the Hiwassee today. Where is the best place to launch in that area? Is this where the crappie fishing is or is it closer on down to the TN river? I am not familiar with that water at all...

DHaun, I was told today the best place to launch a boat is the marina across the blue bridge on 58. Go north across the skinny blue bridge and take the 2nd right and there is a marina with a good boat ramp similar to Chester Frost, deep water and buoys marking the channel to get out to the main river channel. I was told you may have to pay a 3-5$ launching fee to use their facilities. I was going today up there just for a change but the wind got up about the time I was heading out and I decided to do some yard work instead.

You can launch for free at the ramp just prior to the Hiwassee Bridge on 58. Check the mouth of Roger's Creek on the edge of the channel and the mouth of Candies Creek along the steep right bank with the laydowns.

Got it and thanks for the info! I saw both of those ramps today...but I recall reading about a 58 boat ramp/marina in previous posts. Is that the second right past the bridge or is that down hwy 60 somewhere?

RSimms. I got the info from that thread - I need to read better next time - Thanks! I think I saw you going down Amnicola today around 4. I recognized the truck/boat from the pics. How was the fishing today? I saw quite a few folks fishing Lake Jr. on my way back in tonight...the trout must still be there for the taking.

Yea, we'd been below the dam chasing smallmouth. Rough Day! High pressure, bluebird day with wind just screaming upstream. I told my partner that it was the first time I ever remember fishing with my boat drifting "upstream" against a hard current. Of course a bad day fishing is better than a good day at work. We caught one skipjack, one white bass, one spotted bass, on big drum and one small smallmouth. A true mixed bag, albeit small.

I believe they will are stocking Lake Junior again Feb. 16... but Jack (at Jack's Bait & Tackle) told me they are still catching quite a few. He claims that there are some holdover trout from last year that survived the summer. I'm not sure I can buy that, but haven't fished so who am I to say? emoScratch

I talked to my cousin today, and he said that he and some of the guys he works with heard the crappie are bitting.Don't know anymore than that ;)

If I were looking for crappiesl, I would try over the first point inside Wolftever creek bridge and over the flat just past that point. A huge group of fish moved onto those areas last week and last time I looked they were still suspended over those areas. I didn't fish for crappies there, I was hoping for them to be bass but they wouldn't hit bass lures. Let me know if anyone tries it and if you are successful.

I know this post has nothing to do with the Hiwassee but it does have something to do with crappies, I hope.
