I got out for about 6 hours today to look for some crappie. Actually bass fished for about 30 minutes. Caught 1 SM on a saddle between to small islands. It came on an Asai shad that was blue/chartreuse in color. 2 green sunfish, and 2 bluegills on the AS cb. It was so windy on the river that I decided to run to the Wolf and Savannah to look for Crappie. I caught 27 on docks. Only 1 in 5 was keeper size though. But fun to catch nevetheless. One dock in particular yielded 13 crappie on 1 corner of the dock.

The fish were around 6-8 feet mostly today. My best bait was a black/chartreuse tube. Caught some on a southern pro bug that was black with yellow twin tails. Water temp today was around 78 mostly. This PM before I quit it had warmed up to 80 in spots. A few more cool nights and it is going to turn the fish on big time, I think.emoGeezer

You always have some great info in your reports Drumking - Thanks! I almost went catfishing today after work myself but due to the wind I decided to wait until Thursday. Are you seeing other crappie anglers out there at all? I'm wondering when a good time to try some trolling might be...I had so much fun last Winter/Spring that I'm wanting to try it again if its possible to catch them trolling in the Fall.

Hey drumking, good post man. It's got me to thinking about fried crappie! Seriously when do you think trolling would be good for those guys? Do they seem pretty deep right now? I was thinking about hitting some of the channels with no grass and trolling a little bit in a couple of weeks.

Drumking... I've been reviewing maps this evening. There are "Springs" marked. I know of one Spring on Nickajack where I used to be able to catch some crappie, and some good bass, during the really "cold" winter months. Typical water temps in high 40's but area around the Spring would be in the low 50's. Have you ever checked any of those out during your winter crappie exploits?

DHaun, I actually haven't tried trolling much in the Fall. I typically start checking out the trolling pattern in December, but usually with marginal success. But January they'll appear. This year we caught 25 keepers on New Years Day. It was a "Happy" New Year. emoBeer

Thanks for the info RSimms - I figured I was a bit early but if the wind and water is calm and there are no crowds I have the best time trolling. I don't mind waiting - Winter will be here before we know it and I still have some in the freezer to fry up. I may try this Fall even for some marginal success just to get on the water and relax.

Hey Dickie, keep some of those crappie tied out for me. I will be home this weekend to catch some.emoSmile

David, I never troll, so I'm not an expert on that technique. I talked to one man who watched me shoot the docks today for a while and motored over and talked to me for about 1/2 hour. He shoots docks at Weiss lake and wanted to know if I was catching any crappie. I had 22 at the time that he came over. He is coming back tomorrow to fish for crappie. He was bass fishing today. I saw a couple more boats and from the looks of things they were floater fishing. Probably for crappie as well. Trolling can be an effective tool to locate the fish sometimes. I just watch water temp. depth of baitfish and fish wood is possible and edges of creek channels otherwise. Hope this helps.emoSmile emoGeezer

The fish today were in 8 feet or less. Last week, I made a 2 hour scouting trip and caught fish in 12 feet. Maybe the cooler water is bringing the fish up. It won't be long until the bite will be hot.emoGeezer

Yep! I fish downstream from springs in Richland creek in the winter time. I just love a cold 42 degree day in late January or early February with a gentle rain coming down. I'll have the whole creek to myself. Nobody is crazy enough to get out on days like that but last year we caught 85 keepers on our best day in January. It was our best day of the year.emoBigsmile emoGeezer

Feels good to have those little boogers pulling and tugging on the line don't it. Needless to say you were flipping it into the right spot. Good info mr DK, I think I'm going to expand my hunt for different types of fish, can't let you have all the fun. Still working on those baits we talked about.

Thanks, Shocker. There is no rush for the baits that we discussed. I have some in the freezer and with crappie fishing beginning to take over, I'll be throwing small plastics and maribou jigs for the next 7 months. I left a few out there for you today. emoBigsmile emoBigsmile

Great job drumking, I've seen you at work and you can flip those jigs into a coke bottle floating 20 ft under a dock if you need to. I just bet this next few months will yield many of those slabs. Good fishing.

Thanks DK, I can't wait to get on the water on Saturday. I have tried fishing after school but they are not bite'n in the afternoon. It seems that the am is the best right for now. Like Dhaun, I love trolling for crappie. Some guides from Lake Wiess told me that they catch their biggest crappie in the fall & winter trolling the creek chanels and dropoffs. Thanks for your report.
