I took Dr Phillip Gawthrop out for 2 hours of Crappie fishing this AM. We landed 7 keepers and 4 throwbacks near Sequoia. They were caught on tubes fished about 14 feet deep. Bites were very subtle this morning. We also caught 1 large bluegill and 1 spotted Bass. We jigged spoons for about 15 minutes and Dr Phillip hooked into a very large fish, probably one of DRC's big blues. He had it on for about 2-3 minutes and couldn't get it to come off the bottom. It finally tore off. We can only imagine how large that sucker was. It was giving him a good fight. emoGeezer

Those look like some really good fish there DK. Red/chartreuse huh? Were they on current breaks, docks, or flats. Were they associated with a channel? Still all black crappies I see. Looks like fun but cold. No wind this morning though, that's better than with that wind whipping.

Polo those all look like big white crappie to me. Blacks are a lot darker than that and are really a more striking fish. Nice fish DK. I know that area that you guys were in and I have caught some nice ones in there before. I just can't figure out what is going on with the depth. One day they are in 4 feet and the next in 15.

They were on the edge of the channel, but near docks. They weren't on the docks, but close by. Hard to tell by the pic, but the tube is actually a tri-colored black/orange/chartreuse pepper. We also caught them on red/white.

These were all Black Crappie. As you pointed out in your post below, these fish had no vertical bars as the White Crappie have. Although they were lighter in color, this is typical of deep fish. The closer to the surface the fish get, the darker the color. Also, during the spawn, the males turn really black. Even the White Crappie males turn black when their hormones get hyper active. emoBigsmile The Black Crappie are called "specks" in Florida and other places. Actually, I prefer to catch Black Crappie. They fight better. I can tell the difference also in the shape. The Black is slighter more round, like a bluegill, (maybe that's why they fight better) while the White Crappie is longer, more streamlined. But it takes a trained eye to tell the difference. If you catch 1 of each and put them side by side, you can really see the difference. Did I leave out anything?emoGeezer

If I'm not mistaken , Black Crappie (Pomoxis annularis) has 7 dorsal spines , while the White Crappie (P. nigromaculatus) has only 5. Annularis in latin explains the perchlike markings (stripes) on White Crappie. Wish that I had gone out to catch either one today!

You are exactly right bass 15 and as a matter of fact that is the best way to truly tell them apart.

I stand corrected. Those are blacks. Just not as colorful as I have seen them but I guess they must have been fairly deep. Good eye Polo.

Are they stocking the Black Nose Crappie in the Chick?

Flip, I caught 1 blacknosed crappie last week that was 9 1/2" long. Fishinvol caught one up at Dayton that also was around 9" long. Don't know if they are stocking them in Chickamauga, but I know that they stocked some in Watts Bar some time ago.emoGeezer

The hats were an overkill, TT. My grumpy old man hat was enough to stay warm. When I fish in 38 degree weather with a light misty rain, I don't have to worry about someone already fishing the spots that I like to fish. It eliminates the wannabes from the true fishermen. LOL emoUpsmile We only saw one more boat up there and it was about the time that we had to stop fishing. I only have time to fish 2 hours on Thursday mornings, but we sure wanted to fish longer. I believe that we could have managed a really good catch.emoGeezer

I'll take you when the weather "fairs" up enough for you.emoGeezer
