Gator called me last night and offered to take me fishing in his boat since mine was still in the shop and I leaped at the chance. We met up at Wolftever around 10:30, launched, made about a 4 minute boat ride and commenced fishing. We had 16 keepers in the first hour. It took us nearly 3 more hours to finish that other limit plus two keeper culls and about 30-40 throwbacks, many in the 9 1/2-9 15/16 inches long. It looks good for next year's fishing. 4 bluegills, and 4 yellow bass completed our trip. We quit fishing about 2:35-2:40.
Nearly all fish were caught on panfish stingers in various colors. It really didn't make any difference about color as long as it was pink and white. (JK) Pink and chartreuse worked fine too. White/chartreuse also. Fished shallow 3-5 ft most of the time. A very few were caught while floater fishing but the majority were caught tight-lining with 1/32 oz bleeding hook jigs. After the initial feeding surge, we had to back off just a couple of feet and fish shaded areas as the crappie moved a little deeper when the sun got overhead. Of the 15 that I took home, 11 were males and 4 females that will drop their eggs when the moon gets full on April 2nd. They are about ready to do their spring fling.
Saw Flip in the parking lot as we were leaving. He caught me peeing on the pavement. He made a citizen's arrest and started to give me a ticket, but he realized that it was just an old drumking with a bladder problem. Gator doesn't carry a pee pot in his boat. I hope that this is enough info for all you crappie hounds.
