Crappie hunt II - 02/28/07

Did not do so well today. But I seemed to do much better than several others that I talked with today. Three groups that I talked to were skunked by the crappie today. I caught about Fifteen with six keepers. I did the same thing as yesterday with the firecracker grub and side scan. It worked again but the numbers of fish were just not there today.

I hooked a largemouth that looked to be about Four pounds on my micro-light trout rod. "What a fight". I wore him down enough to lip him, however as I tried, the crappie grub just popped out. Darn, that would have been a nice pic and release for CFF on that little rod.

I pulled a couple rods baited with minows behind my boat at different depths all day and only caught one 4" yellow stripe on one. Trolling minnows was not the bait of choice on this slow day.

Took a break fron CF flats and ran up into WT. Big zero for Wolftever.

Saw Jmax going to the WT ramp.

Thanks for the report LL - Were there still birds and gobs of bait in Wolftever?

Good report LL. I am still hearing that folks are catching them upriver. Maybe there is just a lot less bait fish up there.

DHaun, there is still huge amounts of bait in WT and there are litterally 1,000s of seagulls back there out in front of and sitting on top of the Wolftever fishing club docks back there in the mid creek. It's really incredible the numbers of gulls there are back there. I've never seen so many, not even at the beach. Jmax and I fished for a short while back there and didn't get a nibble. I would expect that there are places back there where the fish are hungry but the bait is so plentiful and so pitiful, that there just aren't hungry fish. They all are bloated with bait that is just too slow and ill to get away. I hope that it's just the stress that the cold water put on the bait and nothing else. I showed Jmax one of the bald eagles back there when we were out.

I thought that was you Liveliner, I regonized the boat. As polo said we wet a hook and he caught one bass out in the lake in the couple hours we tried. That morning before polo got up I managed two crappie and a drum in the Wolf but as everyone is saying there seems to be way to much for them to eat right now in that area. Jmax
