Fishing Fire and I decided to head to the lake this morning as my truck's water pump went out last night and left me stuck without transport. We got on the water about 8 and had caught around 30 by 1030 AM. The bite cooled down a lot around 11 but we stayed another couple of hours and picked up about 18 more fish. We had 13 keepers and 35 throwbacks, some of which went 10" but we had plenty for a mess and I didn't want to keep more than we'd eat in one sitting. Most of our fish came from water around 4 feet deep. We were using minnows and jigs fished under a bobber. Water temp was 69 when we left. The fish were BLACK this time round. Very nice dark colors. BEAUTIFUL day!

Looks like a good meal there FnF. I agree with you about how "black" the crappies are right now. About half of the crappies that I caught last night were almost totally black in color. I would expect that those are the males but I had never caught crappies that were so black in color before.

Polo I'd assume they were males. The ones I caught were really solid, thick, heavy crappie, but didn't have eggs in them. I don't know if crappie are like birds in the fact that the males darken during spawn (or mating) and have more vivid colors. Maybe someone can tell us.

I'm new to this, but have been studying hard.

2 different species, Black Crappie (Pomoxis nigromaculatus) and White Crappie (Pomoxis annularis).
