Crappie settings for Lowrance HDS-5

My son in law gave me his old(new) Lowrance sonar Unit.
My problem is lack of experience.
Really like to fish for crappie, shellcrackers, this is a 16 ft john boat operation.
Need advice from experienced user for the tweeking of the settings as the manufacturer only guesses.
Appreciate any help!!!!!!!!!!!!!
