ok gun nuts have another question I have a friend that has a winn 1400he want to cut the barrel down and make it short to keep inhis home I know 18ish is legal but my question is how short canwe go and still have the gun cycle correct how far past the gas ports must it be so it will get enough gas to work thanks

The thing I did was to just purchase a "Deer-slayer Barrel with the slick bore. I now have either barrel for whatever my needs may be for that Gun combo. You do not destroy the value, you double it as a combo.

Under Tennessee law, you cannot have a barrel length less than 18 inches or a firearm with an overall length less than 26 inches.

Here is the statutory language:

Prohibited Weapons (a A person commits an offense who intentionally or knowingly possesses, manufactures, transports, repairs or sells: . . .

(4) A short-barrel rifle or shotgun Further, a “short barrel” is defined as “a barrel length of less than sixteen inches (16”) for a rifle and eighteen inches (18”) for a shotgun, or an overall firearm length of less than twenty-six inches (26”)[.]” Tenn. Code Ann. § 39-17-1301(12)

I bought my remington 20 ga pump, lightweight wingmaster back in 1978 and it was set up for deer hunting. Came with the short slug barrel. I knew then it was a great home defense gun due to it's build and weight. The thing kicks like a 12 gauge and is very powerful for a 20 ga.

I once read that for a home defense shotgun - it's safer to add an extra 1/2 inch when you intend to cut a barrell in case you make a mistake in your measurement. They highly recommended to let a gunsmith cut your barrel - they know where to begin measuring from the chamber end to get a legal measurement. You will get nailed to the wall for even a small mistake and be 25 3/4 inch over all or a barrel you cut yourself and it's measured by any law enforcement agency and it's less than 18 inches.

One of these years I'll buy me an older beat up 12 ga pump to modify. I want one with a bent barrel or broke stock as I'll put a pistol grip on it, cut the barrel so my gun is 26 1/2 inches total then paint it flat black, add a night light, lazer pointer and an elastic slip on 5 shell holder to have an extra 5 shots handy.

Last year, I tried to buy an old 12 ga pump here on the CFF but everyone had guns that were too nice for what I wanted. Thus the bent barrel or broke stock to lower my cost.
