Well I finally got some time to do a leak down test. All but one cylinder were 20% and it was 30%. Test was taken 1/2 inch past TDC with flywheel locked. I am still getting alot of carbon on the plugs, BLACK, I want to inspect the thermostats this winter so when I pull the head I can take a look inside. I'm thinking the motor is in good order for now. I still think the main issue is bad gas in the tank, I may drain it and refill it. May not. I got a fuel gas water seperator for it but have not yet installed it. I cleaned the terminal strip, removed the power packs and cleaned and inspected the grounds, and next I will break every wire plug and clean with alcohol, or beer which ever is more handy emoToast . So I'm thinking the wedges on my transom which put the motor at a steeper angle and my prop may be my speed problem. When the motor is all the way down and sitting in the water it looks like it is ready to push the front down to dive. I have to trim it over half way to get it to look level. I got a 10" jack plate from luvtofish(great deal and thanks again) and talked to performance prop through email, I plan on giving them a call soon and drag the boat up there and see what they think. I installed a H2O pressure gauge as well, Only reading 2 pounds on the hose but the motor was not all the way warm yet either. I have ran it for 30 min in the drive before and can still lay my hand on the head and block.( my neighbors love me). So it looks like if the cutting out problems, dropping half the motor, continues I will look into a new power pack. The carbs were cleaned out 2 years ago but it has sat a year and a half. Should I look at rebuild kits for them? If the tack is right it idles at 1000rpm in netural, seems high to me. It still bobles/cuts/SPUTTERS, thats the word, at top end, not sure whats causing that. Checked the fuel bulb while running and it was not sucking flat???? So intill it leaves me stranded on the lake, its time to fish!!!! If i ever get a day off that is...

Not the best numbers in the world. Those engines are notorious for coking due to X-flow design. That would not cause you high speed issues.

If the carbs set for 1.5 years, I would clean them.

If the fuel is that old also, then it needs to be drained as the octane is low.

Run 87 octane in that engine as that is what is was built to run on.

1000 RPM in neutral OUT OF THE WATER is normal as the lack of back pressure on the exhaust being under water is missing. It should idle around 650 +/- 50 RPMS in gear IN THE WATER.

Take a friend with you and have them pump the bulb when it acts up and see if it straightens up. If so the fuel pump is starting to go. Run it too long like that and it will damage the engine as it is running lean and will melt a piston.

Just my .02 emoToast

So wrenchin 2 should I pull the heads off and take a look? It would only cost me a couple of gaskest and some time, May save alot in the long run as well after reading about old man101?????????

Gaskets are cheap. It could save you money in the long run. Maybe carbon build up also. But with the surging, who knows. I would get that repaired ASAP if the cylinders look good and start running a carbon remover such as sea foam, Berryman's, Ring Free, ect.

the oil tank and stuff has all been removed, what part # is the fuel pump rebuild kit, I cant seem to find one for my model year

After looking in the manual, I dont know what I have, looks different than whats on the motor, I'll take a closer look when i get home tonight.

If it has a VRO pump ,which is a big round pump and factory on your engine, I am not sure if you can get a kit anymore. One of my suppliers told me it wasn't yet another guy found one on a website. Maybe old stock. If you have to replace the VRO pump it is around $400. You can install the earlier pumps on it and Pro Marine make a upgrade kit for them. Need to verify what pump you have and if it is at fault. Just my .02
