Anyone know much about dacron fishing line? I see it still advertised. By the time i began fishing in the early '60's, we were using mono ("cat gut") on our Bronsons and Zebcos. Some of the older folks still had their baitcasters with dacron on them, at least i assume that the line was dacron. Every now and then you can still find an old baitcaster with dacron still on it. Usually it seems to be pretty strong. I haven't used the new braided lines, but i know all about them. What is the deal with dacron? Mono must have had some advantage over it in order to replace it so quickly. Would it still be useful on modern baitcasters, spinners, or even spincasters? Just curious, anyone have much experience with it?

Dacron is a DuPont branded polyester. Monofilament is Nylon which is a much better polymer than polyester. I assume the Dacron you are talking about is a multi filament line.

I haven't seen any of that stuff in 50 years but I remember it would rot from one year to the next then mono took over, it also had a big diameter, I guess this was for strength. The baitcasterreels of the day were pitiful also, you had to do a 360 degree cast.

Have you tried looking it up on google, ask jees, yahoo or any other web searches.... I'm sure someone that has been fishing long enough would have some stocked away somewhere... With the Fluorocarbon we have today, I personally don't know how to use anything else.... I feel bites that would of never felt with the older fishing lines....

As a Textile Engineer I have to say that Polyester does not have the chemical or abrasion resistance that Nylon has. Abrasion resistance is really the key with Nylon. Nylon was developed by Dupont in the 1940's for toothbrushes since it would stand up to the abrasion. You really need that when your line is rubbing on your guides, your boat, rocks, stumps etc. The tensile strength is not as big an issue as the abrasion. Also Polyester is also more dense, meaning it will sink faster.

Dacron is still used as fly line backing, there are backing replacements like gel-spun. I still prefer the Dacron because it fills up the arbor well. Dacron was used by many well after nylon mono entered the market, but mono was pricey then. Once today's super braids get a lot cheaper Dacron will probably finally disappear. At least for fishing use.

Haven't seen any in years, but I do know that these "Trick Shot Casters", you know the guys used to that travel around doing trick casting at targets with the outdoor shows? Anyway, they will not use anything but dacron! But they ain't fishing you know!

The main advantage to Dacron was that it had zero stretch!! That's the reason it was preferred for sailcloth. It replaced nylon in passenger car tires because it would not "flat spot".

Cortland still sells it . It`s called micron. They sell it for fly line backing. It`s good stuff ,dosen`t soak up water or swell up when wet.I have used it on a casting reel and it works good , no stretch, great for top water fishing.
