Hey guys, just wondering if you thought my daughter (turns 3 in Sept.) is old enough to fish yet? Everytime my wife gets home from work Jade screams "We going to riber daddy?" lol...and tonight she picked up a stick and was pretend fishing. I found a cute dora the explorer fishing pole at walmart but i'm not sure what I should start her off with if she is old enough. I think she'd have a problem understanding patience but she gets so excited when me or her mommy gets a fish on. I thought of rigging up a small hook and a bobber 1.5ft up and just letting her do the 'ol bread ball fishing from bream. What do you all think? Any suggestions on what I should rig for her being so young? emoScratch

Take her. Just remember while your out that shes probaly not going to pay as much attention to whats happening as much as you want her to. I would hook the fish then give her the chance to reel them in. When she wants to play something else let her. As long as its fun she will always want to go again. I have a 6 year old and thats kind of what I have figured out with him.

I took my nephew who was 3 on hi first trip years ago and to this day, everytime he sees me he wants to know if its time to go again. As long as u continue to keep a close eye on her you should be fine. my daughter turns two in a few months and she has already been out in the boat. One word of advice though, make it a short trip. There attn span will not last long then they get wild being stuck on a boat with no where to run and play.Have fun!!emoDance

Maybe all kids have problems understanding patients. My 4 nephew is still working on a consistent cast. You always end up helping young ones alot more than what you think. If you are used to fishing for hours on end like me you will have to realize if a young one is with you you will be going home earlyer than you expected.

I just bought a boat a couple of weeks ago. I've got 3 kids 1 boy 7 yo and 2 girls 3 and 2 yo. Our maiden voyage was just cruising around and a little fishing. Now everyday "Let's go fishing daddy" Just keep it short for them. If there anything like my girls make sure you fill the tank. FASTER DADDY GO FASTER!!!

I started my daughter when she was 2, fishing from the shore. She had a old Zebco with a short pole and used to sit on my tackle box. We normally fished for short periods with other activities. At that age, small sunfish were enough excitment with all being catch and release. At age 3, she caught a 3 lb. rainbow trout in North Carolina. While at 4, she really enjoyed fishing for crappie (faster action).

My son is 3 years old as well and I started him last year with blue gills in ponds with the Superman rod. This year I have taken him on the boat once and he loved it. We drove around more than fished but we did find some brush piles and tied on a bobber and bought crickets. I didnt fish a rod for myself, too much trouble. I took a gatorade, oreos and gobstoppers (dont tell my wife!). If I ever thought he was getting bored I feed him full of crap emoLaugh emoLaugh then he would be ready to go again. We only caught a couple bream but it was a great trip for both of us.

He wanted to cast the entire time so I finally cut the hook off, he didnt care or notice and he casted over and over out of the back of the boat. I took that opportunity to bass fish deep for a couple minutes. Of course I didnt catch anything.

Also remember to leave your rod in the truck.

Honkeytonker says it best right here.... the one thing you gotta remember when you take a kid that young to fish, is that you are NOT going to be fishing yourself. So, make up your mind right from the get go if you are going so YOU can fish, or so you can enjoy HER fishing? Take it in little bites. I still have that challenge with Augie who is 11yrs old. When I am fishing and dialed into it, I get to where I overlook him and he KNOWS this.... then just sits down in the back of the boat or goes to throwing rocks when on shore.
After meeting your daughter, in my humble opinion, she is not ready to fish yet. Yes, she can sit in your lap and the two of you can do it together, but she is just as tickled with a 3 in bream as you are with that 5lb bass. Keep it in proper perspective and you'll be okay. Hope you don't mind my .02 dude.... Use the same approach with your WIFE!!!!! emoLaugh emoLaugh emoLaugh

Hmmm, CA, you are a wise as a 39 yr old man. Keep up the good work.

Exodus, she will let you know when she is ready. If she picks up the rod, let her fish, never force her to hold it though and you will be alright!

First, come out to the CFF "meet N greet" at HSP on the 21st of June. Many good techniques and tips will be presented, including: How to catch fish with kids. Four things: Short trips(2-4 hours).. Be a Guide (don't fish yourself).. Go after a species that is easy to catch (seasonal).. Find those fish by yourself first (Homework)
