Camden in 7 years old, in second grade. We have praticed hard for several years using a scoped air gun at the house and this past week we started on the .243. After seing her shooting sub MOA and how well she handled the weapon, I knew the rest was up to me.
Saturday morning we set up in the side of a large food plot ( that hasnt sprouted because of the drought) but has a big patch of standing soybeans and standing corn around the edges that deer are still hammering. Not long after shooting light the deer began to move. We got to watch a small buck pestering does, all out of range. She was frustrated that I wouldnt let her shoot at 150-170 yards. Finally one of the smaller deer broke away and started heading toward us feeding slowly. She had been holding the gun up for a while watching the deer and she said it was getting heavy, so I went to lean it up against the shooting rail. As I did, I saw a deer walking underneath us, as I set the gun back up on the rail, I told her to freeze, we had one under us. About that time the deer blew, and took off. He ran about 50 yards and made the mistake they often do, he turned dead broadside to see what we were. Camden was already on him. I reached over and poped the saftey off and said shoot if your on him. She sent the 87 grain bullet right where you want it to go, and as soon as I saw the impact and the donkey kick, I knew it was a heart shot. After a few minutes of celebration, and some tears on my part, we walked down to recover the young button buck laying in the field. After a couple pics we hauled him straight to the house where we dressed, quarted, and iced the quarters with just enough time to get to her soccer game. She is such a good kid and I think she has the fever. Pic says it all!
