At the new house here in the great town of Ramer, TN, we have a large property that covers 17acres. The driveway is very long and meanders through the woods back on the lot to the house. So, the previous owners have survielence equipment EVERYWHERE and a number of motion detectors around the lot. The one at the end of the driveway alerts you to anyone coming up the driveway, which I hated, but now have come to know and quite frankly, I like knowing when someone is coming to my house. Even if it's just a few second warning. Some of you may recall my mentioning it before and my sharing that every night around 3 to 4 AM it goes nuts. You hear a doorbell sound all morning!!!! I sit up in the bed and watch the HERD of deer walk right up my driveway. Like clockwork, they come through every night/morning.
We've jumped them on the back portion of the lot a number of times when riding the four wheeler or walking the dog down the trail we've quickly made in the short two months living here with the fourwheeler. Uh, er Louie has made.... So, tonight an unusual occurence made me grab the mag light and head outside. I turned off all the lights outside and went to the middle of the driveway. I turned on the light with my trusty lab, Luke, standing on a heel command at my side. I had hand signaled him to heel and stay. He was almost on point. He was looking at my 2 o'clock and intently staring into the woods. I could tell that he was onto something when his tail froze at full mast.
It was totally black under the canopy of the trees in the dark. I turned on the light and started moving it slowly and BAM! 10 yards to my 2 o'clock 8 BIG 'ol eyes were looking right at me! I was startled and didn't know what I had found at first. Was it the coyotes that I hear each night? They were very still. Staring right back at me. Big yella eyes looking right at me, but I couldn't see what in the world it was? I just held my ground and waited for them to make the first move. Last thing I wanted to do is get attacked or charged by startled coyotes!!!! Luke, still on his point, was motionless. Probably thinking "what have we got here boss?!?!?!?!" He never even growled or moved an inch. Which honestly surprised me.
I finally gave in and turned to walk off the driveway and into the edge of the woods. I crouched to get under the lower lying vegetation and there were 4 of the biggest deer I've seen that close in a long while. They all stood up and just walked right by me, more annoyed than scared. They've obviously been bedding in this place for a long while. They are 30 yards from the fruit trees and 50 yards from the wrap around porch. I'm thinking "NOW I know who ate all my pears!!!!" Just wanted to share what I found in the yard. Can't wait to see which one I put in the freezer this fall.... trying to find it in myself to NOT justify not even putting up a stand. I'm fairly sure I can just sit in the rocking chair on the porch this fall. They walk within 10 ft of it. I'm thinking I won't have to drag it too far but Mary may freak with the blood spot on the driveway. Tonight I could have had my pick with a ball bat. They were that close.... beautiful and absolutely heart pounding.

That's awesome man, glad to hear you are surrounded by wildlife. Every now and then I will see deer in my yard and it is always a peacefull sight. Sometimes when I'm mowing they will just walk right out and start browsing around :)

Uh... I would, but my wife asked me to do it outside the immediate yard. She loves them, loves to eat them, but would be MORTIFIED if she saw a blood spot on the driveway or the pile of entrails from gutting a deer. It's going to happen. That much is a forgone conclusion. I'm just not sure if I want to hone up my long lost bow skills or just put slug in one. I kind of like the "art" of it, much I like to fish with artificial bait predominantly so I can feel better about out smarting them. I know Gerald Hargis will love that one....

Spence, don't be shooting the pet deer from the porch, ain't sportsmanlike, wait untill you run over one of them in the driveway.
