I was fortunate to get some time on my daughters busy calendar this year convincing her to spend some time with me at the forgotten coast and fish a day or two out of Mexico Beach. Her first day offshore was an epic one with seas as calm as a pond sight fishing Mahi off the grass mats topped with numerous huge amberjack 20 miles offshore in the nearest reef we could locate in some decent colored water.

We also took some friends out from SC for their first trip on a different day and the Amberjack were there in greater numbers. We had them chummed-up behind the boat eating at the surface! Next time we may see if we can land one on the fly rod. These two boys caught AJs on everything from live bait to 20lb spinning tackle with bucktails. It was great to sit back in the shade and watch someone else do all the work :)

I caught AJ, several kings, and also tangled with my first Blackfin Tuna only to have it devoured by a pack of huge barracudas as soon as it came boatside to be landed. It was an incredible fighting fish with some of the fastest and powerful runs I have ever experienced.

We have been fishing many times since she was a kid, but this was one of the true highlights of my life to share this experience at sea with my daughter and a real bonus for her to have such a great day. I think she understands a little better why I enjoy this activity so much!

Video highlights below - I think the most exciting video footage is of the schools of Mahi we located and kept chummed-up next to the boat in calm seas. They were incredible tasting fresh off the grill and we had a nice cookout in the front yard sharing it with our neighbors and friends!

Yes they will last a lifetime tndoe - good to hear from you!

I had to make a tough decision to miss important meetings at work risking looking bad at a critical time when the team is working on a tight deadline -or- this trip. I chose this trip. Life is short. I figured when I am old looking back on my life that I would not regret missing a few meetings working late at the office near as much as this rare opportunity to be with my 19 year old kid a few days :)

I would like to do that type of fishing with my son. Great trip David. I'm sure she won't forget that trip.

Hey BFG - I know a couple guides that are on the same pattern consistently (we got lucky) so if you ever plan a trip down this way just let me know.

always get excited to see your post from the "forgotten coast". my dad and I fish out of St. George island and it has been several years since we have been able to get down there and cant wait to get back.
thanks for the post.

whats biting down there in the fall?

Hey foodsaver - Just like in TN the fishing improves in the Fall on the Gulf Coast. Tarpon are still around until early October - Reds and trout heat-up, Kings move in close after the bait before water temps drop and can be caught from the marina wall, a few sailfish seem to also move in during September. Lots of bird and bait activity nearshore and off the beach - the area explodes with life and I hope to be able to experience some of it!
