Did anyone see NRG out over the weekend?

Apparently y'all don't read the fishing reports lol.. I was out on the lake , launched at Soddy Daisy Boat Ramp.. was only on the water a couple hours at the most .. about the time I pulled the boat out of the water the skies opened up .. and didn't stop till this afternoon .
I'm so glad I didn't stay any longer than I did, that and I had a sick 7 yr old with N1H1 ( swine flu at home ) wife didn't want me to be gone long .. we found out today that he has it .. but they said wasn't really that big of deal .. he has to stay home all week.. his school was closed today any way due to flooding .. he was soo sad he cant go to school all week! NOT! LOL

My motor still has some bugs to be worked out .. died a few times.. and spit and sputtered didnt have full power like it wasnt hitting on all 4 cylinders or dirt in fuel line or pump .. Im gonna replace the spark plugs, clean the fuel pump, and put a filter inline, and adjust the throttle cable some more .. and see what that does later in the week .. I will be back out there and will try it again.. If that dont resolve it I guess I will take it and let someone else tinker with it

Remember... Those older OMC did not have the best idle, especially the ones without bleeder systems. They allowed fuel to pool up behind the reed and flood it. Most of the time after a long hard run they would idle like dog pooh and would eventually clear up.

Glad to see the old girl back in service.

well .. Found out one thing .. make that a few things lol ..

I should have put a filter on the fuel line first .. and should have removed the orifices in the float bowl and cleaned them all good.. and I found out someone else had tried to remove them once before .. and buggered up one of them now you cant remove it ..

I tried to force it out and buggered it up some more .. damned brass lol .. I decided to just take a thin wire and clean out the hole and leave it alone .. hope it will be ok..

I checked the price of new plastic float bowl for the carb 65-88 bucks !!! Dang

I will just keep my eyes out for a used one or used carb on ebay .. and hope all is kosher the way it is .. but if not will have to bite the bullet .. I dont think it could be drilled out .. the plastic threads would be toast ... any way hope it works good enuff

Forgot the other issue .. thermostats are on the mid section, they were all full of trash .. and the popits where full of junk too ... ordered new thermostats and one of the mounting bolts for the cover broke off at the head .. on the cover its in the middle and still has enuff the get pliers on hopefully can get that bolt out .. its a stainless steel bolt to be so hard stainless sure does snap off easily emoBang

Will try it out again this afternoon/evening .. at Chester Frost

My biggest prob is at the moment a broke bolt in the cover on the thermostats.. I spent 3 hrs trying to get that !%%$%!&@&! bolt out .. I tried a propane , pb break free, locking pliers, everything .. the only thing didn't try only because I didn't have a way to do it was weld a nut on the bolt .. I can turn it slightly tighter.. and turn it back .. its only in there about a 1/2 inch and about 3/4 inch sticking out .. but thats the tightest half inch there is on earth lol

ditchdoc666 - 9/29/2009 6:26 PM emoBang Parts everywhere!!! I even kicked a few of those thing a ma jigs!!!!

that is cause you were cold and numb!!!!!!LOL!!!! I remember it was so cold that night my pants were frozen stiff where we were running it and my pants got wet. Dang it was COLD!!!!emoEek

Why not take the boat over to Rodbuilder and get him to weld a nut to the broken stud, cool it all off and then heat a bit on the block around the stud, spray it down with wd-40 and while it is hot it will suck the oil down around the stud then work the bolt back and forth slightly to loosen it up and eventually screw it out.

Well the biggest prob is that the bolt is down in the engine pan, the v4 motors for those who dont know the v4 models at least the late 80s models the thermostats are below the block on the mid section 2 hoses run from the thermostat housing to the block one hose for each head.

The bolt that is broke is the middle bolt and its only a 1/4 bolt, and now after trying to crank it out .. is rounded cone shape .. Im not sure welding a nut will help much..it could even cause more problems.. Im prob gonna have to take the engine off and drop the lower pan down.

Then cut off the bolt flat and then using cobalt drill bits drill out the screw and then tap it for a helicoil .. Im gonna take it to a buddy to see if he thinks he can weld a nut on whats left of the stud. if it breaks off I guess I will be jerking of the power head again, If I had just checked the thermostats first when I was swapping the power head from the original mid to this mid wouldnt have been as big of deal ! Oh well live and learn

If you have to drill it out, Pull the adapter and bring it over here and we will mill it out. The problem with drill bits are they flex and walk where a end mill will not walk. You take a large chance of getting off center or off square or event worse of really screwing it up. I recently built a 140 suzuki that 15 bolts broke off. Mill all out and they were perfect. If you have the powerhead off the adapter is not not much more trouble to pull. Just a thought!!

Well if I have to pull the power head .. duh .. I just thought of something ... I still have the old adapter from the original mid section .. If welding nut dont fix it I could just swap them out and not worry about the bolt.. I just hate to have to unbolt all that crap and put it back on!

Well called TJ SNow . where I used to work at .. they have a full fab and machine shop over on Lee Highway .. and asked my friend and ex-boss if I could bring it by and let Allen ( the welder ) weld a nut on there to see if it would back out that way .. well after 3 attempts it finally came out .. I'm certainly going to tap those holes before I put the bolts back in so that me on the next person doesn't have to go through what I had to go through !!!!

Now I can get the water cover and thermostats on and run it over to Chester Frost and test it out again.. if all goes well will be this eve around 5 or so

NRG you have some of the strangest things happen to you & your stuff. They happen to me too, but most of the time it's my own fault. Good luck withher today.

Put a tad of anti sieze on the bolts before bolting up this time, if you have to do it again it will be a lot easier. SST bolts are the worst in the world to gaull.

Those bolts are usually steel not stainless. Very few of the bolts are stainless due to them being painted. About the only ones I can think of that are stainless on that engine are the lower cap bolts the rest are just plain steel.
