The reason I ask was my starting battery died on me this morning, so I hooked up the trolling mtor battery to start . After starting I went to can leads back to starting battery but my motor died. Are boat motors like car motors ? Do they have a charging system on them ? If so my charging system isn't working or the motor should run . I'm I correct ?

Yes the motor has a charging system, I believe if it's not charging your stator is bad. Thats what happens when you buy a used boat. But aleast you have a prop!!emoLaugh emoLaugh emoLaugh emoLaugh

Dryhorn, the stator may be bad. Also, be very careful of jumping off a Merc or a Mariner as this is really hard on the power packs. I have burnt one up like this. Mine had the old style on it and you could see the yellow part was burnt. It's something to do with the arcing if you don't get the clamps on good and when you take them off it will arc if you aren't careful.

To answer your question your engine does have a charging system here at the house I don't recall exactly what the output of it is but If you bring your boat by my shop I can check it for you in about 30 mins.
The part on your engine that does the battery charging is the rectifier/regulator. It is a definite NO NO to disconnect your engine battery leads why the engine is running and reconnect them to another battery. You risk damaging your rect/reg. If you have to connect your leads to another battery just leave them hooked up until your trip is over. The stator provides the power to the rect/reg.
The first thing to do is to make sure your cranking battery is good and then go from there. Call me if you need help, I'll be gone Tuesday and back on Wensday (706) 891-9921.

I'm having a simular problem myself. I'm taking it apart this weekend, and I'll let you know what I find out. The only thing I can suggest is to test your battery and see if it's good first. Any auto parts store will test them for free.
