Went below the dam this afternoon for some skipjack to feed the catfish.
Took a dozen crappie jigs, tied on three or four at a time, and spent the next hour casting with out a sinlge fish. I guess I am just not meant to catch any.... :(

Any ideas?

I am going to below Chickamauga Dam this AM (Tuesday 7-10-07) to load up on Herring. If you want some instruction, come on up. Look for a grey Chevy Dually and the guy with the green bucket.

I do best with maribou jigs in white. I would also invest in a popping cork as that lets you cast farther. usually I can get them just fine if there is some current but this year has been weird

SpurHunter - 7/10/2007 7:46 AM Thanks for the invite, but I have to work. Do I just use white jig heads, wth no bodies, feathers, grubs, anything?

I use two hair jigs. I do not think the color is as important as the action. However I generally use one white and the other one may be yellow, BLUE, red, orange, pink or.....For simplicity I tie two knots in the front jig and then the second on a 16" line from the front jig. Less tangles and break-offs.

The action that I use to get them is to hold the rod tip low and to the side, crank fast with a hard twitch for each revolution of the spool. Your bait will look like a darting baitfish just under the surface. Cast across current and slightly up-current. Your bait will arch back to you

Skipjack were very thick at Nickajack today. They were jumping everywhere for about two hours after they started generating. My wife, grandson and I caught 22 skips weighing 23 pounds. When they slacked off we headed to the house. We missed half as many as we caught. We were using yellow tubes with white tassels and a white lead head. There was only one other boat below the dam today so we pretty much had it to ourselves. We had a ball. This was the first time our 9 year old grand buddy had ever seen skipjack. He was tickled to death.
