We made the fateful choice of going downriver to try and avoid the probably chaos coming out of CFP. Went to first spot and saw fish moving around. Fished in slough for 30 minutes or so and headed out to point, pitching to docks on the way. Pitched tube to dock and felt bump. Set hook and after a ten minute fight on a spinning rod and 8 pound test brought up...a monster drum. This would prove to be a sign of what was to come. After moving out on the point saw some fish schooling and caught 14.5 inch smallmouth on a Storm 360GT swimbait. Picked up SK Red Eye Shad and started casting across point. About 4 casts in the rain started hard again so I stopped my retrieve to be sure my jacket was velcroed and fish almost ripped rod form hand. Fought for a short time and we boated the smallmouth that would prove to be our only keeper. Kept fishing point with no luck and decided to make run up towards dam. Stopped at Yacht club on way to fish sea wall. On first cast pitched a tube and once again screwing around with rain coat when fish hit and took off. Broke off under the boat as I tried to give it some line. Upset about this one to start with. Moved on to Dam and we started fishing rip rap with Square Bill and Tube. Dusty felt a tap and set hook. Another Drum in the 10 pound range. That is when I figured that the fish that broke me off at the Yacht club was more than likely another Alabama smallmouth. I then caught a drum on a crankbait that we weighed to be at 10 pounds, then hooked another one almost the same size. Moved to our final stop around the marina. Pitched a creature bait and felt hard thump. Figured to have finally hooked big largemouth but after a long battle turned out to be another drum...this one pushing 14 pounds. At this point we simply ran out of time.

Badchoices on my part, as I should have waded into the thicket of boats in hopes of repeating the performance from CFF 1. If only it had been a drum tournament, I would havepossibly liked our chances. Anyway, on a bright note, took home some money for smallmouth that was short of 4 pounds but a pretty fish.
