After an up and down couple of practice days we were sure of only one thing...we were probably going to get rained on.

We started close by and within 30-40 minutes Dusty had put a limit in the boat. I adjusted baits and we started doing what it seemed we did a lot of...culling ounces. Turned around and threw a buzzbait out onto a rocky bank and commented..."nothing better than having a smallmouth crush a buzzbait". About that time the rod bent over 10 feet from the boat as a bass crushed the bait. Got him in...just short of 3 pounds. Also had 2-3 more buzzbait blow-ups that did not hook. This seemed to be the story of the day. Lots of two + pounders, but we could not find the big fish.

We fished our primary area and headed back outto the river when I hooked one on a rocky point on atechnique Inever fish. Fish bent the rod over and took off....then came off. This was the exact same spot I had caught a 4.7 a few days ago so I immediately felt as through we let one get away. Turned around to see a 4 foot water snake swimming towards the boat, which promptedus to scare it off and continue along our way. Got to our second spot, and aftercatching 3-4 more fish, an elderly lady stepped out in her housecoat to warn us of the impending storms. We heeded her warning and about 10 minutes later the skies opened up. We took refuge in a boat slip and stayed there for close to 45 minutes as I was not about to fish in the lightning. Once we got back underway we made a move up river, but never got anything going after that. Moved to an area that is usually a great bedding area this time of year to find several fish on the beds...all Gar.

Productive day early on, catching 20+ fish, but never could get the big fish you absolutely haveto have in a three fish tournament. Fish caught on buzzbaits and soft plastics. Congrats to those who put up big numbers. Earl/Ronnie, Mark/Ray, and Day/Silvers seem to be setting the pace that everyone is going to have to catch up to, with the defending champs hot on their tails.

To make mattes worse, we made the fateful decision late in the day to discard a 1.5 pound spotted bass, as I figured someone would catch a larger one and I wanted to maximize our weight. Not one was weighed in, which cost us $50.

Look forward the night tournaments starting up. At least we canbe suck at catching big fish in the dark...
