Dropshot

We took off early with everyone present and headed to our fist spot. Took a few minutes when I caught our first fish on a topwater. I eyed the spotted bass and guess it was a little short of 12 inches (hindsight makes me wish I had measured it...). Threw it back and kept fishing. Had another one blow up on my topwater but did not hook. That is when I started catching the first of 4 redeye I caught during the evening. Throwing a dropshot had a fish break off right before dark, but I took it in stride andfigured it was a catfish. At dark we moved down to some deeper water and started fishing. Dusty caught his second catfish of the week, and I caught two shortlargemouth. I then felt a tick and hooked into what I thought was a healthy smallmouth until we got her in the net andDusty shined the light on her...a monster spot which ended up at 3.15.We kept fishing and kept catching primarily redeye and 13-14 inch largemouth bass. I kept asking Dusty where he wanted to move and the later it got, the more I heard "WaffleHouse". Around 12:15, we were struggling with small fish and I told him we would move to our last spot, and if wedid not get another fish by 1:30 we would load up and prep for weigh-in. We moved at 1:03. At 1:20, Dusty hooks a big fish on a chatterbait. He keeps saying he is sure its a catfish. As he shines the headlamp down the fish comes up and you can see the "yuge" mouth ona spawned out female. We got her inthe boat and immediately realized we needed that third fish. Fished hard for another 30 minutes, and I had one hookup but the fish came unhooked. Got back to the weigh-in and everyone agreed it had been a tough night. As the weights started coming in we thought, "...we actually have a shot". Ended up in second placebehind Earl and Ronnie, and took biglargemouth (5.98) and big spot (3.15). Looking back, I wish I had measured that spot to start the night.

Congrats to Earl and Ronnie, as they inched closer toan elusiveAOY.
