Dr Phil and I participated in the inaugural Chattanooga Crappie Club tournament this morning. We were fortunate enough to win the thing and also had the big fish. 2.1 lb, 16" TARP Black Crappie. We were blessed. It was a rainy start to the morning as Dr Phil and I launched at HBSP at 5:30 and motored over the CFP in the rain to sign up for the tournament. We had a very good turnout for such a rainy start. 11 boats signed up and fished.
Everyone seemed to have enjoyed the way that the tournament was run and just wish that the fish had been a little bit bigger for everyone. We got lucky and caught a few more bigger fish that helped us to win the tournament.
We had a 7 fish limit for 7.6 lbs. We started on docks, but after an hour or so of fishing docks and only 4 small keepers to show for our efforts, we changed gears and went deep. Main river channel drops in about 15' of water and a few isolated stumps around the breakline. Our hottest lure was a 1/16 oz Bobby Garland 2" shad in the Blue Thunder color with a chartreuse tail light. The fish were active for the time that our fishing time watch said was a minor movement. We didn't catch another keeper after that feeding spree which was over at 11:00 AM.
Thanks to the guys who organized the club and ran such a fine tournament. Job well done. See you at the next tournament in June.
