There I wuz, raking and blowing leaves in the ditch, when Fishing Machine (Terry Rogers) called me and asked when he could go fishing with me. I needed a good excuse to quit blowing leaves, so I said 'how about today around 11:30 to 12:30. He said that he was ready to go, so I finished up what I was doing (didn't get done) and hooked the boat up. I called Terry and asked him to meet me at Tyner Lane ramp. We got on the water just before noon. My good wife, Mrs Drumking, backed the trailer into the water and launched us and away we went.
I scanned some shallow brush on the way to deeper water, and found nothing on one of my major brushpiles. So, off to vertical structure we went. Terry landed a big fat crappie on the first cast. I had intended to keep 2 fish for dinner, but we wound up letting that fish go. I want him and friends this coming Sunday. Terry caught a tournament limit of keepers there while I was catching one, plus a bluegill. He caught a bluegill too. emoBigsmile
Then we went to the creek to scout for some brush that we put out in the spring. I had them marked on my other graph that died, so I was anxious to find them and put new waypoints on them. Only found one and it had what looked like a big school of crappie on it, but the wind by this time was blowing pretty hard and we didn't get any bites from that school. On to the next spot.
A roadbed in deep water. The wind was tough, but Crazy Ivan didn't do half bad on his control, while Terry was catching yet another nice keeper. Moved to the other side of the creek and fished the other roadbed drop and guess what? Terry caught another nice keeper. I got in some really good boat control practice and was very accurate on my casts in the wind. No fish for me though. emoBang emoBigsmile Terry kept trying to give me one of his BG lures that the crappie seemed to prefer today. I didn't have any of that color. Big secret. Monkey Milk. I finally put on a Patriot which is close to MM, and began to catch fish the last 30 minutes that we fished.
Wind was white capping by that time and although we were sheltered from the wind at this last location, but, we were getting chilly and decided to call it a day. Just before we stopped, Terry had the poor judgment to cast in a different direction and hooked up with a nice fish that was making that pretty "reel" music. He said, "This isn't a crappie". He fought that thing for about 5 minutes and he would get line back, and it would take it again. I told him that if it got off before we saw it, that it was a drum. emoUpsmile We were both thinking slimer, but it turned out to be a nice surprise. A Rockfish about 4-5 lbs. In the 47,000 cfs current on 4 lb test line, Terry had quite a battle. He didn't want it, so, I took it home along with 2 crappie to eat. I wanted them tonight, but Mrs Drumking told me that we would have them tomorrow. Since she is the boss, I deferred to her decision. emoUpsmile emoUpsmile emoUpsmile
22 crappie, 19 keepers, only 3 shorts. 2 bluegills, and 1 Rockfish. Great 3.5 hours of fishing, Terry. Let's see if you can repeat that tomorrow. I stopped by Hamilton's and now I have Monkey Milk in my arsenal. I'll call you when I'm ready to go. Thanks for going with me today.
