I was sitting around the house today around 11:30 or so and just happened to look at my fishing time watch and saw a 4 fish icon up, so I checked on the peak and it was 12:40. I thought, self, there is very little wind, not too cold, a perfect time to go scout and fish alone. So, Mrs Drumking agreed to drive me to the ramp, launch me and come back for me when I finished. It was well after 12 when I finally hit the water and began scouting.
I was looking in the river for drop offs in different places than I normally fish. Voila'! I found a drop with a big school of crappie hanging on a brush pile or tree between 12-15 feet deep. I tossed a marker, brought the boat back around the marker until I was downstream of the fish. Put Crazy Ivan down and set the spot lock on. I caught 3 fish on the first 4 casts. I caught a few shorts there too, but some 12" fish. When they slowed down a little bit, I put a waypoint on my graph, and eased on up from those fish. About 50 yards away and still on a dropoff, I found another school of crappie. Tossed the marker and repeated what I did before. But only caught a couple of nice keepers. Waypointed that too, and went to the bluff where I idled along scanning in 15-30 feet of water and found a school of crappie. Got the boat downstream of them and caught a nice 12.5 inch crappie. Only one that would bite from that school. I motored on down the bank a ways, saw another school of crappie and repeated the same. I caught another 12.5 inch crappie on a 17 count with a 1/16 oz jig head with Bobby Garland plastics on it.
Color didn't matter as I caught fish on 4 different colors today. The dropoffs were 12-30 feet drops. Fish hanging out about 15-20 feet. 3 days before the new moon phase. Fishing can be good for the next few days. It will be a mid day bite, so there is no hurry about getting out at daylight. I kept 12 crappie for the freezer. Had 1/2 dozen or so shorts.
Early this AM, Wanda and I drove up to HBSP to see the progress being made on the ramp and building. I will post a couple of pics. I didn't see anyone to ask when the time table is for re-opening the ramp. They have made great progress in the past month.
