Dr Phillip Gawthrop helped me put new bunk boards on my boat trailer this AM, and afterward, we decided to fish for a while. We had to put on rainsuits after about 1 hour and left them on the rest of the day, although during the middle part of the day, the sun came back out. We were putting the boat back on the trailer when this afternoon rains began again. Good timing.
We had a very good day of crappie fishing. 18 keepers and about 30 shorts. Our best 7 crappie weighted 12.18 lbs by our digital scales. We had 5 fish between 13 and 13.9" long and one 14" white crappie. Too bad this wasn't a tournament day. We would have won this thing today. Grin. We caught our fish on Blue Ice Panfish assassins 2" size on 1/24 oz jig heads and on Bobby Garland Eclipse 2" Baby shad on 1/16 oz jig heads. All our fish were deep today. We had 5 white crappie over 13" long.
TVA was running over 83,000 CFS and the best water temp that we saw today was 82.9. It took us almost an hour to finally hit on the best color today, which was a 2" Panfish Assassin Blue Ice 1/24 oz chartreuse powder painted jig head. We tried other colors earlier, but the fish wouldn't touch them, so we finally stayed with the blue ice until the afternoon. My first 13.5" white crappie came out of a school of fish that we located on my graph just off a drop from 10 to 20 feet of water and the fish were on a rocky point near one of the coves around Harrison Bay State Park. It was a lone white crappie out of that school, but it was the biggest fish on that spot. We caught several fish out of that school, including a few keepers and some shorts. I caught 4 in a row at one time. emoBigsmile
We checked a couple of bluff structures and found some quality keepers on the bluffs. Dr Phil caught a TARP 14" white crappie and on my next two casts, I caught a 13.75", 13.9" white crappies, so 3 big fish in a row on that particular spot. These fish fell for the Bobby Garland Eclipse 2" baby shad on a 1/16 oz chartreuse painted head. All fish that we caught were on or very near bottom in 20 feet of water. I checked some of my old favorite spots and failed to catch any fish on them. They must have smartened up, cause I could see them on the graph, but they wanted nothing to do with us. Could be a timing factor as well. The river was surprisingly clearer than the bays which were still a sandy brown color. The river had a greenish tint to it. Of the 7 biggest crappie which we weighed individually on our digital scales, the smallest one weighed 1 lb 9 oz. emoBigsmile emoGeezer
