I had the great pleasure of fishing with my favorite and best student ever today. Cuonthelake invited me out on her boat today for about 6 hours of piscatorial pursuit. We were in search of the elusive keeper sized crappie. I am one proud Papa, today. You talk about putting on a clinic, that girl put on a clinic today. If I had tail feathers, I would spread them like a peacock because that is how proud I am of her fishing knowledge and the willingness to learn new techniques.

We fished main river docks that were deep. No shallow docks for us today. No off shore structure either. Lots of current in the river making it hard to present lures properly. All I can say is that Bobby Garland rules the water. We fished with Slab Slayers in various colors, but the key to our fishing success today was that we found out early on that the fish didn't want a 1/16 oz jig. Too fast for their preference today. We had to down size to 1/32 oz BG Slab Slayers and every fish that we caught was deep. We even scrapped some off the bottom.

I know that this is going to seem like a fishing tale because we haven't had any good reports lately, but we managed to catch 50 crappie with 40 of them being legal sized keeper crappie. The last keeper today was caught by none other than my guide today and it was a nice 12.75 inch White crappie. All the rest were black crappie. Water temp basically was 83 degrees most every place that we went. Wind began to get up a little later in the day, but by that time, we were both tired and ready to come in.

Candi, thanks for taking the old Drumking fishing today. This is the best day that I have had since May. Looking forward to many more good fishing days like today. Thank you for posting all the pics. Your camera much better than mine.

Oops! I forgot to tell you about the other fish that we caught. 2 bluegills, 2 yellow bass, 1 spotted bass, 1 channel catfish, and 1 white bass. I had a big fish pull off after a 30 second fight. Drum. That's my call, although it had catfish slime on the line. emoUpsmile

Thanks for coming along with me, I told you I had a point to prove to myself that even in this heat and warm waters I could catch keeper crappie during the day light hours. Made it even sweeter to have you along, you did a great job on teaching me how to use jigs for crappie fishing and I will always be grateful for that and the friendship like no other! emoHeart ...Now just teach me how to get a big ol striper emoLaugh

When I saw that Grin on your face this morning and the master guide you were going with I knew you were in for a good day. Think sailfish and I ended up with 5 keeper crappie,3 largemouth 1 smallsouth and 3 bull bream all released. Sailfish done most of the catchin.

Hmmm, I think I hear that striper fever creeping in. It won't be too long before they will want to play at Chick. Or head up to the Bar right now. More fun if you have to dodge the railroad bridge on that first downstream run. I remember Dickey taking me down to the dam and fishing with his "finesse" baits. What a learning experience that was. He will put you on them for sure, and boy is it fun. You may never want to crappie fish again, lol.

Nice day for you two. It is all good.

Regards, Norman

emoThumbsup That is a great creel for the daytime fishing right now, that duplicates the numbers we have been catching on our midnight runs. CU has grown from 'grasshopper' to Kung Fu Master! Looks like you may do really good in the CCC Tourney coming up soon. emoToast Just gotta know...is she aspittin on that thang or what? emoBigsmile

Whatever it is that she is doing, we all ought to be doing the same thing. That's all I got to say about that. LOL. emoBigsmile emoGeezer

Glad you and Candi got into them. To catch them like that in this weather is not what most of us (me) can do.
