Happy New Year everyone. He's back and fishing for crappie! emoDance emoFish I took my favorite biology teacher crappie fishing today. He said that he was completely out of fish, so I had to make his wife and son very happy. Caught just enough to make them happy for one day. emoBigsmile
Biofisher (Gary Fomby) and I left HBSP at the mid-morning hour and just looked at schools of fish at various places until the feeding period started. I moved around a lot and didn't find any active fish until I went off shore and battled the 86,000 CFS current that TVA was pushing through the dam.
The spot we chose wasn't too bad. Almost an eddy area just off the main river and it had fish on it. Didn't take long to figure out how/what they wanted and after I caught 2 or 3, Gary quickly tied on one exactly like the one that I had and he began catching fish too. We doubled up a couple of times and the fish were really active until the almost calm wind, suddenly picked up from the S like it was supposed to and that caused the I-Pilot to change the position of the boat and we could never quite get in the proper position after that to present the lures where the fish were. I hate it when that happens. Huge school of fish and can't position the boat without running right over the top of the fish. Current going one way and the wind going the other makes for difficult boat control when the fish are picky.
I had to quit because we had family coming for mid-afternoon dinner, so Gary and I put the boat on the trailer at 2:00 pm. Saw Jmax at the ramp just going out. Wish that we had time to stay for a couple more hours.
We had 11 keepers and about 15 throwback crappie that were from 9.75 to 9 inches long. I did catch 3 that were about 5 inches long and told Gary that it took great skill to catch a crappie that small. emoBigsmile
Glad that you were able to get out on the first day of the new year, Gary. You know that my back seat is open for you when ever you get a day off from school. Do teachers ever play hookey?
We caught our fish on Full Moon 2" Baby Shad (Bobby Garland plastics from Crappietown.com). Glued on a 1/24 oz jig head with #2 hook. They worked well. Dead sticking is the best way to describe the bite. Make a 20 to 25' cast, just watch the line until it goes slack, set the hook, and reel him in. emoBigsmile emoGeezer That is how easy crappie fishing is during winter. I must be slipping. I forgot to take any pics even though my camera was in my pocket all the time. Probably too cold to get it out. emoBigsmile
