I have a fishing tale today until Hal posts the only pic that we took today and then it will become a report. Posts without pics are only fishing tales. emoBigsmile
Hal picked me up in his new boat this morning at Skull Island ramp and we motored on down to the discharge area at the nuke plant. There were a few boats already sitting there waiting on the white bass to get started. It seemed like a long time before any white bass activity started, but in the meantime, huge paddlefish kept us entertained by porposing and jumping out of the water. I could clearly see the long bills on the paddlefish and they were over 10 pounds mostly. The biggest one that I saw clearly, looked to be well over 20 to 30 pounds. Had a bill about 24" long and was almost as big around as I am. emoBigsmile
Hal's new boat has some character to it. He told me that the dealer said that the boat belonged to Bill Dance last year and he put about 10 hours on it, so Hal practically has a brand new boat. Reckon any big bass have come over the side of that thing?
Anyway, back to the tale. The whites finally began to surface a little bit and they seemed concentrated in a very small area downstream from where they were 3 weeks ago when we fished up there. There were 9 boats and we were all sort of crowded up, but we still had a good time. Hal and I landed 16 white bass and 1 had a nice largemouth jump off after hookup. Nearly everyone caught some fish. I don't think that any one boat had a Mother lode, but it was fun while it lasted. Hal and I fished with tail spinners, and roadrunners and spoons, but my best lure was a pop-R top water lure. I caught over 1/2 of my fish on that lure. I love top water fishing.
We got bored after the whites slowed down and went up river to crappie fish. We stopped on a structure that Bassert was fishing and we ran him off his spot. JK emoPoke He called us and told us to come up there and fish with him. We caught around 25 crappie up there on Bobby Garland 2" shad minnows. I was using Bluegrass and Hal was using crystal with a tail light. While there, Kingfish and friend stopped by to chat us up for a few minutes, but we couldn't get them to throw any lures at the fish. Must be a big secret what they were using. emoPoke
We left that spot after a while and continued on upriver to fish some ledges and found some crappie on top of a ledge and we caught 25 to 30 more crappie, mostly small fish. Altogether, we probably had 10 to 12 keepers with a 13" being largest. Lots of 9" fish. So our total catch today was 16 white bass, 50+ crappie. We quit fishing at noon. Not bad for a pair of old emoGeezer who haven't been crappie fishing much in a while. We did see the Kid hauling water downriver. I met Daniel (sorry that I forgot his screen name) at the Skull Island ramp this morning. He was going catfishing.
That's it for me until Sunday AM. Then, the good Lord willing, Dr Phil and I will be going to Tims to fish with Bent Rod for walleyes. That is, if Dr Phil can get permission to go. emoBigsmile Sorry, Doc, you aren't immune to a DK barb. If I don't ever tease you, it is because I either don't know you or don't like you. JK emoPoke Hope I get to gig a lot more folks on here before my fishing days are over. emoAngel emoBigsmile emoGeezer
