Ricky Watt has been trying to take me to the Hiwassie for some crappie fishing for a long time and we finally got together with Mother Nature and our schedules and made it happen today. It was a great 1/2 day of fishing. We started a little after 8:00 AM and quit fishing just before noon. All our fish were caught on Bobby Garland Baby Shads in various colors. I tried 4 different colors and caught fish on each. Ricky more colors than I did and caught fish on nearly everything. This was a day that it didn't matter much what you threw.
We caught some fish shallow early, then when they stopped feeding, we moved to a deeper bank and using the graph, found fish in about 15 plus feet of water near brush. We anchored down upstream from the fish, cast out into the current and let the current swing the jig down and in toward the bank. The fish that we caught were holding in about 12-15 feet of water around a stump that now looks like a Christmas tree from all the jigs that we placed on there today. emoBigsmile We also hammered some white bass around the 58 bridge and had about 1/2 dozen of the little yellow bass as well. One solo Bluegill and 1 tiny Largemouth bass completed our catch today. We caught several quality fish today, but we didn't take too many pics. Just a few.
Our totals: 35 keeper crappie, about 15 shorts, 15 white bass, 6 yellow bass, 1 lm, and 1 bluegill. 73 fish in under 4 hours. I like that kind of fishing.
Thanks for educating me on the Hiwassie today, Ricky. We will do this again someday, I'm sure. emoBigsmile emoGeezer
