To heck with Crappie fishing, Rockfish are beginning to start up. Dr Phil and I made the trip up to WB tailwaters this AM and found all 5 turbines running along at a nifty 45,000+ CFS. It took just a few minutes before my brain kicked into gear and put us on the fish. We got there and started fishing around 8:30. They shut the turbines off at 10:00. emoBang
The lure of choice, or what worked today was an old standby lure. My own shadhead jigs powder painted chartreuse and tipped with 5" pearl Sassy Shads. The fish were in a narrow slot of eddy water adjacent to the rather rapid current. We would get about 3 casts per drift before running back up and starting all over. We landed 6 Rockfish, kept the limit of 4 and released the last two which were caught by Dr Phil. We also tallied 3 of my pets. Alabama Smallmouth for you not familiar with my pets. emoBigsmile
After the turbines were shut off, we decided to run down to the discharge area and see if the crappie were doing anything. There was a boat with KY numbers on the side. Watched one of the guys catch and keep a 19" Smallmouth Bass. We drifted down a little bit from them and Dr Phil thought that he was hung up on the bottom, only to have the bottom shake it head and then make the "reel" music that we all love to hear. emoBigsmile It was his PB largemouth bass and lacked one ounce being 5 lbs. A beautiful bass that Mrs Drumking will thoroughly enjoy putting in the Crisco lake. Our keeper Rockfish weights were 8 lb 11 oz, 8 lb 8 oz, 6 lb 6 oz, and 5 lb 9 oz. Almost 29 lbs of Rockfish. Great eating size.
After that, we put the boat on the trailer and rejoiced all the way back home. That is our story and we are sticking to it. emoBigsmile emoGeezer A little pic heavy today. Finally.
