The boat ramp disasters thread got me thinking. What's the dumbest thing ever happened to you while fishing? Should be good entertainment.

When I was about 12, my Dad and I were fishing on pier at small pond behind our house. I was standing there minding my own business, then next thing I know I was face down looking at some wood planks. I hear my Dad hollering and I still don't know what happened. He hooked me in the head with a buzz bait while casting, I guess I had wondered right behind him. Anyway he won't pull it out and drives me to the Doc with a chartruese Buzz sticking out the back of my head. Boy I was mad, had to sit in that waiting room with the buzz still in my head. HAHA

I took my mom fishing one day, and she was sitting in the back and i'm fishing and minding my own business and then I hear her scream and what had happened was while she was casting, the she let the pole slip and she threw her pole and everything in the water. I about dropped mine from laughing so hard, needless to say we had to leave after that, no way she was using mine.

When I was about 8-9 years old my dad had an old old v bottom aluminum boat and we pulled it out of the water and I don't recall the exact reason but I had to hold on to the front of it with a rope to keep it steady (it wasn't tied down to the trailer and it wasn't pulled all the way on). Well we were still on a slope from the ramp and the front of the boat had no weight at all and I could only hold it for 10 seconds or so and then that boat flipped backwards off the trailer and almost pulled me through the air with it. Fortunately there was a couple guys there at the ramp (next to shirley bridge at Wolftever) and they helped my dad get it back on the trailer. I don't think I got it trouble but my I think my dad was kind of embarrassed at the whole thing.

I hit the dam up at Watts Bar one night waiting to lock through. Dad was on the front and we were pulling up to the rope to signal....guess I forgot to shift back to reverse. emoDoh

Well, I was going to tell yall about them, but basicaly just read any fishing report I have posted, that should give you your "fix" for a while. emoBang

When I first got my new boat I was thrilled to be fishing my first tournament with MidSouth as a boater. I had someone back me in the water, then shortly thereafter realized I had left the plug out. Just a little embarrassing...

I continually warn clients to "Hold that rod tight. Catfish can hit hard."

But I am the only one who's ever had a rod... and expensive rod... yanked from my hands. I dove in after it, DEEP! But I saved the rod and one client caught the fish while the other client helped me back in the boat.

Only casualty was the camera on my hip, and my pride.

Nothing. Ever. Do NOT go back and read my posts. Do NOT speak with about half the folks that have fished with me. Trust me.

fell off the bank and drove the trigger of a pole up in my hand and i jumped up and ran to the front of my boat to try and get a big bass i seen near the bank and a set of pliers was stuck in the crack of one of my storage boxes and i steped on it it whent to the bone of my heal and ruined my nike shoes

This one ain't on me and there are plenty...but his is on another guy. I used to get off work (3rd) shift and run down to Sullivans and wade fish the grass before I had a boat. One time this feller put a BRAND NEW Ranger in and I heard him tell another guy..."thats a hard way to fish"...talking about me. Not a problem. The feller in the new boat trolled past...waved and I went back to fishing. I looked up river and thought.....where did that guy go...I never heard his big motor crank. Then I spotted something....it was the prop of his trolling motor sticking up in the air. WHOA!!!!!! Here he was.....tugging that big boat toward shore....UPSIDE down. I thought WTH...I'm already wet...so I waded up to him. He can touch bottom here. I wanted to say..."THAT SURE IS A HARD WAY TO FISH"....but decided against it. LOL This feller was heaving..gasping...tugging. I said hey mister...calm down....the damage is done....your boat can't sink no further than it is now. He said I forgot to put the plug in....and when I noticed the inside full of water I jumped down and she went over. He said...." do you think me and you can flip it back over".............HELLO! I told him me/him and six others probally couldn't flip it upright. The last I saw him he was walking up to Sullivans.

I learned the hard way last year about this time to use pliers to remove treble hooks. I was getting one out of a bass's mouth and it started flopping in my hand. I buried one prong of the treble into the thumb that was holding the fish. Oouch!! I ripped it out and bled like a stuck Irish pig!

Another time I was with TW and I had a new baitcaster that I was having trouble with. I went to cast and the spool locked up. The momentum jerked it out of my hand and almost into the water. I bet Tyler thought I was a stooge! emoDoh

The dumbest thing I ever did was let my oil tank run dry. I never noticed that the alarm system wasn't working and I was going through such anintense period of fishing that I wasn't doing any prefishing checks on my boat. Very expensive mistake. I now mix the oil in the gas tank.

So, if you turn the key and don't hear a beep, your alarm system is down.

Take a look at your oil tank!! Don't let it get even close to being empty! At the same time, check your bilge for water. If you open your drain plug, do it at home and put the plug back in before you put your boat up. Don't make a habit of leaving your plug out.

Keep a spare rubber plug that you can stick in the drain hole from inside the boat!

If you have a working bilge pump, flip it on for a few seconds when you leave the ramp. If it pumps water out, investigate!!! One time I did this, the pump never stopped pumpimg water out and I discovered that my live well hoses had been chewed through by rats.BTW, Home Depot, not Lowes, has the special type hose material used on OMC bass boats.
