A friend and I are interested in trying an elk hunt and would be interested in any outfitters you would recommend. We're looking at a rifle hunt in the fall of 2011 but won't rule out an archery hunt. We don't have our hearts set on any particular location but are looking at Montana. We need to narrow our search down soon to make the draw timeframes.

I really want to do a DIY hunt someday but I'd like to go with an outfitter first to learn the ropes. Anyway, any help would be appreciated as the cost is high for us and we want to make the best of it.

Here are a couple of booking agents you can contact and they will work with you in setting up the hunt you need.

http://grayghostsafaris.com/ contact L. David Keith here, great guy to work with.

also give Butch Manasse a call, http://worldwide-hunts.com/

these guys represent outfitters all over the world, and they can meet your price range as well as your expectations in type of hunt, whether its horseback backcountry or modern lodges, gun or bow, etc... they can also help you with your applications.

Colorado has the largest elk herd in the country, and you can buy a tag over the counter, although you can't expect very big bulls usually, those areas require preference points in most cases. wyoming, montana, idaho, utah, arizona, they all contain areas with some opportunity for big bulls. you have to be careful in some areas as well due to the high wolf predation in the past few years, the elk numbers can be way down, so try to do as much research as you can before you shell out the cash to go. you might also consider subscribing to eastmans hunting journal, they have lots of info for all the western states. good luck on your hunt, my elk hunt in 07 was phenomenal. it's hard to get your release on your bowstring when that big bull is staring at you at 45 yards!!
