My engine is running a bit rough, will not idle correctly and the bulb does not stay full of gas and I have to pump it to get fuel to the engine on start up

i was thinking one of two things
1. Water or trash in the gas line preventing a good suction
2. Fuel pump may be going bad

Any thoughts before I have to take it to a shop would be greatly appreciated.

Check that fuel filter....under the cowl. At least mine (Yamaha 50) has one.

You might also change water/fuel filter if you have 1. It should in your battery compartment before your primer bulb.

Fred, you need to check and make sure that some of Justin's long hair didn't get into the gas tank and clog up you pick up line!!! LoL

Changed the water/fuel separator thingy and it still idles a bit funny. It runs fine going up and down the river but when I stop it idles rough and it sounds like a lifter is knocking?? My next step is changing the plugs and see if that helps. Really wish I was a boat mechanic. I hate paying somebody to work on my crap..

If anyone has any other ideas I am all ears..

I would try the new plugs - I have a yammy 200 and have the same problem - new plugs work - I've put 3 sets in during the last 18 months......may be too much oil?

If it's like mine....the oil tank is easily removed. Take it off and clean it out real good. May have trash in it. No oil....not good. Or at least take the hose loose at the engine and see if your oil is getting thru that far. May have to blow some air into the tank. I just hope your engine isn't damaged yet.

if i were and u already havent done this take the gas line, and clean it all out replace bulb and filter, replace all plugs.cut wires to oil pump, and mix oil with gas,oil pump tends to go out on outboards alot.

After all this work I have put in on it, it looks like I was way off base.

I guess when the boat is in the water it sounds like the engine is knocking, when in reality it is in the lower unit somewhere.

After I changed everything out today I took it the lake and just to start it up and see if it still knocked. Well the ramp where i was going to try it was way down and could not get my boat in the water except for the lower unit, and this turned out to probably be a blessing as when I started it up you could tell right away that the lower unit area was what was knocking.

Now I have a different issue, but I think I at least know where it is now.
