Hoo-eee! Another beautiful striped bass on 6 lb line! And a story to go with it (what a surprise).

Been having trouble for some time with my trolling motor. It quits - especially under a heavy load - and it needs to reset itself (somehow) before it can be used again. I just cleaned and tightened all connections around the batteries and circuit breaker, and it either is the same or worse now. I will trace and check all of the connections at and inside the trolling motor next, but I am losing faith.

The cat fishing was terrible today with only one coming into the boat while I struggled with the trolling motor and the wind. Here is a good fishing question: are bad words actually spoken if there is no one nearby to hear them? Anyway, I used the big motor to position the boat when the electric would get stupid, and sure enough I hung a big fish. Of course, it immediately went under the boat and hell and gone downstream while I couldn't reposition the boat to fight the fish. I finally got the line cleared under the dead trolling motor and could fight the fish - remember, it was only 6 pound test. I was pretty certain it was a striped bass rather than a big cat from the way it fought. Sure enough, it was a pretty 22 pounder that I chose to bring home for a few dinners. I cleaned it on the water (bloody damn thing) and spent a fair amount of time washing down the boat with a bucket and the bilge pump. At least that worked. I checked the nav lights and the bait tank pump and those aren't working right now either!!

Some days I love fishing more than others........................

Wonder what the line class record is on 6lb line?
Great job
I'm looking for one that size on my fly rod.

Nice striper, Eric. Trolling motors have a low voltage shutdown built into their boards. Everything you mentioned could be the issue but sounds like batteries to me. Once you pull the batteries down to a certain voltage, the trolling motor will shut off to protect itself, then as the batteries build back up, the board will magically reset itself and your off to the races again.

Nice catch! I want one of those and have booked a guide trip in May to see how it is done.

re your accessories that are out. If more than one thing is out, on the same circuit, carefully check the ground side. The ground side is the only thing that is connected to both items at once. That suggestion probably has nothing to do with your trolling motor, as I presume that is on another circuit. richg99

Wow Eric, great fish! Should be pretty soon when the cats really start biting. I still have great memories of a mid April catfish trip with you, biggest five just short of 60lb average! Hope you get into them soon!

Love to catch those stripers and love to read reports from Eric. emoThumbsup emoBigsmile emoGeezer
