I just finished changing my previous Humminbird GPS reciever/antenna out for the new AS GPS HS Precision unit (about $160 delivered). Nice! There are, however, bits of skin and flesh hanging in some of the more inaccessible areas of the boat that I had to reach into. Makes me wonder - just how many pounds of EricM have been scraped off over the years? We'll not count the parts sliced off on purpose by surgeons............
This new unit has a heading sensor built into it (a magnetic compass) that sends the info to your chartplotter and now will display heading (the way the boat is pointed) and course (the actual track across the ground). By setting the menu to show "heading up", the map display will constantly rotate to the heading, even if you are standing still. This has been a problem for me in the past because I often fish too slowly for the gps to recognize changes in my travel and keep the map oriented, and it can be a bit of a pain to make the tiny adjustments sometimes needeed to stay on a bit of structure or a slow drift line.
While I was doing the set-up work on the 1197, I noticed that the icon showing my current position did not wander as it did with the old puck (a very small amount, but it was enough to leave a track mark on the screen although not moving a bit). I don't know if they made it more accurate, or maybe more stable, but I'm always glad to see upgrades. Speaking of upgrades, I had to download and install the latest software (free) from Humminbird on the 1197 so it would work with the new gps puck. Gotta love a company that keeps your abilities as up-to-date as the processor will allow on their older units!
This, plus the new Lakemaster chip for the Chick (hi-def) that I recently installed, should make the next few trips really interesting. Maybe I'll even fish.
Oh, and I told the wife that these two new upgrades were her Valentine's day and birthday presents, since it will help her catch bigger fish. Seems I lost a bit of skin off of my butt to the end of her shoe on that one.............
