I had rapidly put on a bunch of weight over the last few weeks and this weekend I was actually having trouble breathing so I talked with one of my many new health care professionals (a very long list). Off to the emergency room! They listened to my lungs and heard the ocean. They x-rayed my lungs and SAW the ocean! Holy moly!!!! Admitted to the hospital!!!
It turned out that I was suffering from congestive heart failure, a common occurrence after heart surgery. What happens is that while your heart is weak and recovering, the right side is stronger and pumps a lot of blood to your lungs while the weakened left side pumps less of the returning blood to the rest of your body. The fluids of your blood start to be forced into your tissues, particularly your lungs and they fill with fluid.

Well, the new weight loss plan involves being given a drug to eliminate the excess fluids, and in my case - in 24 hours - I eliminated (peed) OVER 8 QUARTS (2 GALLONS)!!!!! emoEek emoEek Now I know just how a racehorse feels, and let me tell you - at my age it is an enormous pleasure emoBigsmile emoBigsmile . It's hard to imagine, but overnight I actually lost 15+ pounds, my lungs cleared, and I could breathe easily again. I's really scary when you get that short of breath.

I'm hoping to spend the holidays with family if I'm up to making the long trip, so I'd like to wish all of you a very merry Christmas and hope to be back with my friends here soon. Happy Holidays! Eric

Eric, have a very Merry Christmas, hope you get better, take it easy on the trip.

I know exactly what you are talking about. My little Maltese has a leaking heart valve and the blood pools around her lungs. We have to give her diuretics (the stuff that made you pee) to keep the fluid off her lungs. When the fluid builds up she has problems breathing and hacks up nasty foam from her lungs. Pretty sad.

Glad you were smart enough to go to the hospital. Pretty funny that many professional atheletes use diuretics to loose weight for weigh ins, body building shows, etc. 3-4 pro football players got in trouble a few weeks ago for taking them.

emoEek Sorry it happened... happy you (or Docs) figured it out.

I have a feeling you are likely to appreciate this Holiday Season much more than others! You deserve it.
