i got too skull island ramp this morning only to find my outboard would not start. a quick checked reveiled it was not getting any fuel, the needle valve had gelled up and stuck shut. problem (ETHANOL IN FUEL). this happened quickly as i used the motor last tuesday and it ran fine. i have the carb cleaned out and motor running again. does anyone know if gas without ethanol is available anywhere in town?

Bassnbug, I have asked several dealers in our area and all of them said that law now dictates that they have at least 10% ethanol in their fuels. I hate this but the only way you can get it anymore I reckon.

I have asked several dealers and mechanics about it and they have all said the same thing....use a fuel additive, such as seafoam or staybil in the tanks. The ethanol will actually attract moisture and it will also jell some oils. So far I have been lucky this year. Just keep a watch on your hoses and other plastic and rubber lines and fittings. Ethanol is notorius for eating thru them.

I put Seafoam in mine everytime I fill it up. I didn't do that before ethanol. Its good insurance and I recommend that you all put it in when you fill up.

There was a ethanol discussion on another forum that stated Mercury Marine said you got 3% less performance with ethanol gas. A guy I know who has spent lots of time looking in to this says Connoco and Chevron don't add it, but if it really is a law they just may not list it.

Ethanol's problems are caused by older fuel lines being dissolved from the inside out. It also is a real good cleaner, it will take in gunk build up in your tank and clog filters and other things up. The additives tend to neutralize this caustic affect. Newer synthetic fuel lines help. So if replacing any check to see if they are ethanol friendly.

Won't be long till everything will be ethanol and bio-diesel.

I am a new member and have been researching the biofuels for some time now.

Good info John. I didn't think about it but the ethanol is a cleaner of sorts. Just think of all the junk in your tank that is now gonna be going thru the lines! Wow! I guess i will need to be watching it a little more closely.

Ethanol is no better solvent than gas. It is a sorry fuel and all of the gas stations have it. Phillips 66 is Conoco and they have it.

Luckily, I still have a gas station 3 miles from the house that doesn't have ethanol. They don't know how long they're going to be able to stay that way, but they are for now.

There are 2 stations in Chattanooga that DO NOT have Ethanol at the current time. One is at Bonny Oaks Dr. Chevron and the other is on Amicola Highway Chevron. These two are not scheduled to change over until after the first of the year 2009. This is all I burn. Hope this is helpful.

Ethanol is not your problem, mixing MTBE and Ethanol is. Ethanol burns cleaner BUT; burns hotter so make sure you use good lubricant, especially if the fuel has been sitting around for a while. The alcohol will start to settle on the bottom.

FLW magazine had a great article on it...

i have been using the new sta-bil ethanol formula for the last 3 tanks and have had no further issues. finding gas without ethanol is a temperary solution because all gas has to have 10% ethanol by some time next year.
