I have a 2000 70 hp 4 stroke built by suzuki.I put it in the water and started it and would only go to 2000 rpm theen it rain like it had a rev limiter on it. Checked the motor and was not peeing at all.came home and put muffs on and still not peeing.Pulled foot and waterpump is fine.flushed foot and reinstalled .Put muffs back on but still no water and only about 2000 rpm.Took sides off engine and cleared all external line, nothing clogged.put waterhose direct to pickup tube with foot removed and still couldnt get water from pee hole.
questions
1 does the thermostat have to open for peehole to work?
2 Is the lack of rpm a failsafe due to low water flow or low water pressure?
3Where do I go from here?
I dont think I hurt the engine at all .Only ran for 15 or 20 seconds intervals? Was that enough time to start peeing?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

70 H/P Four stroke should not overheat that quick should be able to run for a couple minutes without overheating if you have a temp gun or pyrometer check enhine temp at top of cylinder head should be 126 to 134 degress at 900 rpms does it have a system check guage if so are you getting a overheat light or warning horn. the symptoms you are having sounds like it is going into safe mode how long has motor been sitting. you may have a couple problems you can check tstat in hot water should open at 122 degress it also has a pressure relief valve that can be plugged or damaged and according to the service manual a blocked or pinchd water disharge hose you can check it by removing the fitting from the powerhead adapter plate run engine and watch for water flow

Good advice as I am not familiar with 4 stroke OMC. But you can also monitor around the prop for water flow. when the engine expells the water, it comes out around/ through the prop. On a 2 stroke OMC it starts peeing almost immediatly. On a Mercury 2 stroke carb or EFI, the thermostats have to open or the mid has to flood with water before they will pee. On mercury DFI engines they pee instantly due to water routing through the compressor. It all depends on how they routed the water throught the block.

Now you guys have got me concerned about my '02 150 hp carbed Merc. Mine only spits a small amount of water but does not run too hot. Next to no use on new water pump but my engine set too long as well. I cleaned out pee hole and got it to spit. before that nothing at all. Not Hi-jacking this thread. i will start my own due to this issue being brought up.

The mercury willl pee when it reaches 143* or when the rpm's are raised and the adapter "floods" with water and will pee then. You should hold 2-5 PSI of water pressue at a idle. Once you have made a long run, it should be peeing at a idle.

one more thing to look for on the water jacket housing below the temp sensor there is a plug kind of like a freeze plug that has been known to pop out and cause water to bypass and make the engine run hot

Thanks for all the advise. I reinstalled the old waterpump last night and cleaned the pee line all the way to the manifold and still no water.Today I went and picked up new impeller and installed. I noticed the halfmoon key had fallen down into the pump housing when I removed the cover. Bingo.. Her is what Im thinking happened, the pee line was clogged at the manifold so no water peeing. When I took it apart and checked impeller and cleaned all lines and put lower unit on somehow the halfmoon key fell out of shaft and down into pump housing. When I installed new impeller I checked key and with the muffs on it PEED GOOD.Again thanks for the advise. This is what this site is about and fishing help also.

Just a little tip...When you install the impeller, use dish soap to lubricate it. It will wash away when you start it. You can also use tthe soap to hold the wedge in place. Just my .02

I did use the soap the last time.I saw you post that some time back. Thanks for all the advise you give on here.I found out the reason it wouldnt go past 2000 rpm was that It has a safety rev limiter while in neutral so you dont blow the valvetrain.
