I am wanting to get a good filet knife. I've never used the electric kind. Is that the way to go? What are you guys and gals using? I'm wanting to start eating some these good ole spots and crappie.

get yourself a good electric knife...that is the only way to go....cut down to the back bone behind the gills cutting the rib cage too all the way to the tail. then cut the ribs cage out....best way to do it...IMHO... FA

American Angler in the blister pack. The gray and black one with the curved ergonomic handle. I have used and burned up 11 electric knives in the last 10 years and this one will hold up better than any of the others. Some WalMarts carry them for $20 but Sportsman's Warehouse keeps dozens now for $18. They make them in 12 volt or 120 volt. Most any electric is better and faster than a conventional fillet knife and you don't need to sharpen them for about 300 crappie/spots or about 200 catfish.

What Cheez said. I am terrible at cleaning fish, but that's the electtric knife I use to clean crappie with once or twice a year and I have been pleased with the results. I have the 12v model - I hook it up to my truck battery and clean them out in the yard.

I ended up getting the rapala one for christmas and it is 12v or 120v. I like it.

I have one of the Rapala's too. I got it for when I travel to fish. The nice case and the cutting board makes a nice addition. I used it a couple times on crappie in Florida and it does a great job. Because of the 12 volt motor it will warm up pretty good after about 15 or so crappie so you have to go easy on it if you have a big bunch of fish.

Snuffy I have tried them. As a matter of fact I bought the whole knife that had 2 different lengths of them,6" and 9" and they just don't work near as well as the traditional shaped blades. The narrow blades just don't have any backbone and the tips are blunt. I gave the whole thing away and bought another of the ones like Dhaun has.
