What is the protocol for selling a long barrel firearm across state lines? For example, I live in TN and want to sell my rifle and shotgun to a guy in Kentucky. Im reading I may have to ship it to a FFL place in the buyers state. If anyone can shed some light on this I would greatly appreciate it.

That's pretty much the procedure. The customer should make the arrangements with the FFL dealer and provide you with the address and any paper work. Be sure and get delivery confirmation. You shouldn't have to pay anything, assuming you included the shipping in the price of the guns.

I could be wrong but I thought you could by long guns out of state. I thought the binding was on handguns. I knew you couldn't sell a pistol across state lines but I didn't think that applied to long guns.

Thats what i thought.

You can buy long guns out of state. Ive bought several in Chattanooga and live in Ringgold, GA. You can also buy a handgun out of state, but it will have to be shipped to a FFL dealer in your state, put on there books, & then picked up by you. I dont know about TN or KY, but it costs $65 at my local dealer for them to do the transfer and you have to wait about a week for the paperwork to go through before you can pick the gun up. But it may be different with the potential buyer living in KY.

Cooper, if they are making you wait a week, they are just being lazy. The "Instant check" system is in place in GA, TN, and most other non-communist states. Its takes just a few minutes to process a transfer. You might look for a more accommodating dealer for your transfer needs.

My understanding is that a buy/sell of a rifle or shotgun between individuals that are residents of different states requires an FFL. The seller can send the gun to an FFL in the buyers state to do the transfer or the buyer and seller can meet at an FFL in the sellers state for the FFL to process the transfer. I know I was told this was the ATF law when as a TN resident I purchased a rifle from an individual in N. Georgia. At least one FFL has to be involved in the transfer. Residents of the same state can buy/sell guns without an FFL involved. Long guns can be mailed/shipped to the buyers residence without FFL involvement as long as both are residents of the same state.

I'm no FFL or lawyer but this is what I have been told and verified by checking the laws online.

Im just going to go through a place with FFL. Save myself the possibility of a run in with the law. Was going to include in a trade for a boat. But boat was sold yesterday. But still good to know what itll take to sell them across state lines

i know of a few that was sold and bought by people in difrent states and no paperwork at all just one guy gave cash to another and put the gun in the truck shook hands and said have a good day

I sold a rifle to a guy in New York a couple of months ago and it was pretty simple. I took it to my ffl and payed him $50 and that included shipping and he shipped it to the other guys ffl in New York and he picked it up, but not sure what his cost was. The seller never ships until he has recieved certified funds (money order, certified check, or credit card payment) and everyone is covered and not violating any laws and if both parties are clear on stipulations up front it works out just fine.
