This morning I had a first. First Turkey kill of my life. It wasn't a gobbler, but was a good sized Jake. Two years ago, Dr Phil got me on my very first deer. Now I have another thing off my bucket list. But, I do want a gobbler, so I will probably go again before the season is over.

I hunted in the same place on opening day and not a single Turkey gobbled all morning. This morning, it sounded like choir practice. We kept hoping that a gobbler would show up, but I told my brother-in-law that if a Jake showed up, it was going down. I passed on a big Jake with Dr Phil about 3 or 4years ago while waiting on a gobbler and it never showed up, and I haven't had another in my sights since. (I don't hunt very often. Once or twice per year). How many Turkeys am I allowed to kill this year?

This morning about 7:51, Benelli spoke and my first Turkey went on home to be with Jesus. I carried his carcass home and he is going in the roaster tomorrow. At the present time, he is soaking in buttermilk. emoBigsmile emoGeezer

Nice job! The Toms are being a little weird right now. There are some that won't shut up and some that are completely silent. Again, nice job and congrats on the first bird! emoToast

A man of many talents emoWorthy emoWorthy Now a turkey hunter, who knew. You probably won't be able to tell the difference from a jake and a big tom gobbler when they hit the table. Jake might even be better eating. Thanks for the report, fun stuff.

Great job on bustin that young turkey bird, he will be alot better tablefare than an ole wiley gobbler, but dont expect him to taste anything like a store bought butterball...totally different flavor on the wild game side ,good ideal marinating overnite. Come on now DK, admit it, didnt the hair on the back of your neck stand up when the old king kong gobbler echoed his morning wake up call into the cool crisp air?

Now to make it official as a turkey taker, you'll need to pluck a few fantail feathers to hang on the rear view mirror(I know you have fishing line) and put one feather in your cowboy hat, go back after that gobbler soon cause you'll need a beard and spurs to mount his fantail to display on the wall.

I cooked that turkey today and we had it for dinner. Better than any tame turkey that I have ever had at Thanksgiving. After soaking the bird in buttermilk over night, we seasoned it a bit with seasoning salt, 1/2 stick butter, 2 apples sliced and stuffed, 1 orange sliced and stuffed and 2 bottles of Miller lite in the bottom of the roasting pan. Lid on, and cooked for 2 hours at 350 degrees, then reduced the temp to 300 for another 30 minutes. I checked the turkey with a meat thermometer and it was a perfect 180 degrees. emoHungry Wee Doggies! I hurt myself tonight with that thang. I gotta go hunting again. emoBigsmile emoGeezer
