Fly Fishing is still new to my son and I as well as river fishing. We have had success lake fishing with the fly rod but river fishing and trout have been a bit of a challenge. So, I decided to take him on a guided trip. I caught my first fly rod salmon and what a rush. After that, all the focus was on him. He had several fish on that appeared to be bigger than mine and they kept taking off to the the fast water and ended up losing them. He was successful catching his first trout ever!
I will say, having a guide who fishes the same water every day is well with the cost. We talked to many guys who failed to get a bite as well as guys passing by water our guide new had fish and sure enough, my son would hook one. What a great learning experience we had!

Glad you and your son had a good trip.
You should post about it on ngto. They are more flyfishing enthusiasts than these bass tournament guys and gals.

Salmon on a fly is one of my goals.

Where did you go to catch Salmon? West coast or Great Lakes tributaries?

It’s a lot of fun to try and turn these beasts on an 8 weight or smaller.

Personally I’d rather target Steelhead as a 10# Steelie will out fight out jump and our run a larger King or Coho.

We’re yall wade fishing on reds or boat fishing ????
