Took my first trip to the woods and killed a fat 7 pointer. Heard lots of shooting but it was opening weekend of firearms and also either sex. I hunted Strawberry mtn. in north Ga. Only saw the one deer and it was close to 10:00 and ended up getting home to watch lots of football.

First deer of 2013 season.

Took my first trip to the woods Saturday 10/19. Was gonna fish but firearms season started and it was either sex. ;) I went to an old spot of mine on the top of Strawberry Mtn in north GA. The woods were quiet but I started hearing shots about 8:30 and it peaked my attention. After seeing nothing and hearing a few shots pretty close to me I was thinking I made a bad choice of location going to the top of the ridge instead of down near the bottom. I finally started hearing movement to my right and could make out a deer sneaking in the brush downhill from me. He stopped but luckily he was in one of the only open shooting lanes there and he was looking right up at me it seemed. I tested my rifle out Friday and it was all good so I wasn't worried about him quartering toward me. Made a good shot and he only lived about 5 more seconds emoThumbsup Killed him at 9:45 and made it home to see all the ball games. Good day in my book and the freezer won't be empty anymore. He was a 7 pointer but I wasn't concerned with points as much as I was meat. emoHungry emoHungry emoHungry

Good kill! He is probably at his prime weight for his age before the pre rut takes its toll, gonna be a good load of meat for sure.

Thanks. Didnt mean to double post, had to exit and re-size photo. Looks like we could see an early rut this year with the moon phase and sudden cold snap. This guy was scarred up and had a hige gash with a split halfway down his right ear. Besides fighting I was seeing lots of bushes and smaller trees close by that had been torn up by bucks that I usually see in the pre rut.

Way to go, good to see someone getting one already. Like said, should be some good eating. emoHungry Jmax

where is strawberry mtn

Make a triangle from Manning Mill Rd down to where East Armuchee and West Armuchee roads meet. Nearly the whole ridge is National Forest. North Ga to be a little more helpful.
