This is a little late but....On Monday 4/1 I went hunting with my buddy Jay Jones for our fist trip out since the turkey season opened. We arrived at our spot just after first light and immediately heard a turkey gobble! Needless to say this got us fired up pretty quick. We quickly got in closer and set up the decoys. I was also videoing this hunt for the first time. Once we got set up, I starting calling with the slate call and two turkeys gobbled almost at the same time I'm guessing 80+ yards away. After a few minutes of calling, they were obviously getting closer. After a last gobble at about 50 yards, the turkeys went silent but were apparently still coming in. Jay caught their movement coming out of thick brush but instead of letting them continue to the decoys, he got excited and turned to his left and they saw him move. emoDoh Fortunately, he was able to get a shot at a nice mature tom, however, we didn't get to pull the double. This spot was about ten yards from where we doubled last year! emoLaugh The tom weighed about 19 pounds with a 9 inch beard and 1 inch spurs. We spent the rest of the afternoon surrounded by gobbling toms that would shut down and not come in. The only one I had coming to us on a string was messed up by a live hen that flew over our heads and landed near that tom that was about 70 yards away! Needless to say, he walked off with her and left us schmucks behind emoTongue
