GOVOLS50 (Rick), his friend Chris and I went to Guntersville Friday morning. It was the first trip there for all of us. The 4th member of the party had to cancel at the last minute. We stayed in a cabin with boathouse on the lake at Comer Bridge. Very nice accomodations, although parking 2 trucks and trailers was a bit of a challenge.

We thought that the catching would be tough due to the front that came through Thursday, and we were right. We hit the water about 10:30 Friday morning, and it was cool and breezy, but water temps were around 55. We started in a creek up-river where Rick put the 1st fish in our boat, an 11 inch LM, on a small jerkbait. That was it for us, all day. I didn't get a hit. We threw everything, but my problem was that I threw the spook too much. Chris had gone a little farther up the creek to start than we did, and when we met he had caught a few small LM on a trap. We worked some areas on the edge of the river after that, where Chris picked up 2 "small" drum, 5 and 6 pounds. We headed in at dark and went and had catfish at the Double R.

We went back to the same creek Saturday morning. It was the only place where we had seen bait fish the day before, a good-sized school. We worked around the school of bait for about 1/2 hour when Rick pulled out a 3 pounder, his new PB. Within 20 minutes he had landed a couple more that looked to be 1-3/4 to 2 pounds each, all 3 caught on a black SB w/ purple worm trailer. Huh? What's up with THAT? So far, the rookie Rick has blown my doors off on Big G with 7 pounds to my not-a-dang-bite. At about 4, we started working the creek channel out toward the river, and I FINALLY got hit. A little 13" LM on a crankbait. At least I didn't go oh-for-Guntersville! Chris had again gone off on his own and had pulled out another half-dozen LM and a 10 lb blue cat. Bass on a trap and crankbait, cat on a spoon.

We had planned on leaving Sunday morning, but about 8 PM SAT night the temp had gotten up to 52, which was warmer than it had been the whole trip so far. Rain was headed in, but we thought that it might hold off until after noon, and Chris talked us into getting out early and getting a few more hours in before we drove home. Heck, we were there...why hurry home? "Rick", I said, "stay on Chris' bumper ALL DAY!" With more years of fishing under his belt than both of us together, he obviously knew enough to find the fish, we figured.

With a little help from a couple of locals and a call to 2jigs on Saturday, we thought that we had the pattern figured out. It was still cool when Rick and I got out, and it was drizzling. We headed across the river and began working big jerkbaits, traps, and SB's over the grass. The key was the jerkbait...twitch twitch and count to 10. I landed 3 LM in about an hour, all on the JB. At least I had tied Rick in numbers, but came nowhere close in weight. Apparently Rick didn't like that, so he caught another couple (12-13" ) for good measure. Chris, after talking us into getting out, "said" that he went to the ramp and it was raining, so he went back to the cabin and sacked out on the couch for a little satellite TV. Wus! We headed in after a couple of hours, as the rain was starting to pick up pretty good, and it cot cool and windy again.

Final tally...Chris 10 LM (no keepers), 2 drum, and a cat...Rick 6 LM (3 keepers)...and me, 4 LM (also no keepers).

We felt pretty good about it, what with the weather and it being our first visit to the lake. We came back a bit wiser for the next trip and caught a few fish. A good time was had by all. Wait 'till Spring! We're gonna slay 'em!

the big G can be a tough place to fish at times but what keeps you going back is that possibly on that next cast could be a 10 lber . well at leats you did catch a fewemoThumbsup

Haha! We had 2 cameras in the boat! Ricky slipped those bass back in the water so quickly that I barely got a glimpse of them! I'm STILL giving him crap about it!

Besides, if you've SEEN any of my pics...well, have you SEEN any of my pics?
